I have a 225 Merc that shut off because of low oil. I refiled the oil tank and started running again. Shortly after I blew the #5 piston or center left. Not sure why this happened after refilling oil tank unless injection oil ran out. Does the float shut down the engine or give an alarm? Now do I have to replace the sleeve and piston or have it board and new piston. Can I do the work myself and save some money? I have done slowmobles. Anyone have some advice?

Perfect example of why 99% of people remove the oil injection and premix their motors. Those systems are prone to failure. I think the easiest thing to do would be to have a new sleeve and piston put in. I have never been a fan of having one oversize piston and the rest stock. Just my opinion. Give Jay Smith a call, he's the man when it comes to Merc 2.5s He would be more than willing to answer any questions you have and his work is second to none.

take it down do it right!!! saving money is over-with!!!! when one stuck one the others also ran low on oil along with all the bearings. i removed my auto oiler on my 225 Promax when it was still in warranty thru Mercury:thumbsup: i knew how iffy it was i build motors for a living i did 24 last year . i just rebuilt a motor for a guy who had his rebuilt and the previous builder left the auto oiler still hooked up it had 20 hours on the fresh rebuild the guy did not tighten the cap on the motor reservoir oil pump lost vacuum and boom:( sad part was big reservoir was full ) it stuck #5 which is the hottest hole in the block its bottom hole starboard side( usually drivers side of boat) or on the right side looking from the back of the boat.

I haven't agreed to build a VRO motor period nor will I build one with side pinned pistons for years,or hundreds of successful rebuild and mods. 2-3 motors built and modified a week EVERY WEEK..If a customer doesn't want to draw from my experience and take my advice with these engines about what I've witnessed will and won't make them live I show them the gate. I have no time for come backs for ANY reason so I eliminate the potinental known bad actors = success.

So how much do you charge to rebuild a motor and I bet you have options?

How much $$ do you want to spend??? LOL In all honesty I've never bought ANYTHING from Jay but he's always answered my PM's in prompt time. He's also stood behind several JSRE engines here in Central IL with more technnical help than anyone should 3-6 years after the sale. Jay would be my 1st choice if I didn't build all my own junk and I'd head his way for any parts. Good luck with the fix.

Just seems ta me that everyone "jumps" on tha oiler with any sign of a failure. True that may be tha problem but I would do a tear down and look at EVERYTHING. Mainly tha coolin' system, fuel delivery, injectors and electrics. There are way to many still out there still doin' just fine. But I to agree after an expensive rebuild I would do away with tha oiler. But to lay blame to quickly on that peticular part for tha failure might just cost ya again down tha line............jmo

$950.00 Labor for any 2.5 (that is labor only, and includes no mods and no parts) ......

Thanks for the kind words Nick , its appreciated !
