I have a 75 hp johnson stinger (1975). It is popping out of gear. If I remove the linkage and hold it forward with my fingers, I can drive at full throttle. When the linkage is attached it doesnt move as far as i can move it by hand. I replaced the cables (longshot) but it didnt make any difference. I took the control module apart, and the plastic cam inside is worn, and a fair bit wider than the roller. Will this make the unit pop out of gear, or does the lower unit need servicing? I rebuilt the powerhear 3 years ago, and it runs like a top. It is worth it to me to rebuild or replace the lower unit if necessary. If anyone has any tips please contact me asap.

It does go back in gear. You can watch the shifter arm creep back towards neutral, then it pops out and back in. How hard is it to replace the clutch dog? Does the clutch dog engage in teeth in both the forward and reverse gears? Will they need replacing too?
