I have a 2.4 EFI Bridgeport I am pretty sure the regulator is bad can I put a regular automotive type regulator on it instead of the Merc regulator and I know I will have to get an EFI regulator and also any sugestions as to which one would work the best ?

Yes you can. You will need a adjustable one with a guage. You'll need to set it according to your ECU fuel curve either 39 or 56 psi. Post your ECU# and I or someone else can tell you what the fuel curve is for that ECU.
The gauge screws in where the brass allen pipe plug is.
I use aeromotive fuel pressure regulators on my Drag motors.
You may have to fab a little mounting bracket similar to the one I have pictured here.

The aeromotive is the same one I use on one of my motors. I use a stock one on my stock 260.
Dbug10 if you need a 39# (gold)regulator PM me I have one I will let go cheap.

Might want to check the inlet size of that part number, they are -10 do you really need to support 1000HP? Your going to have a few fittings to get from -10 to -6 (3/8).
This is what I use:
