View Full Version : OMC Tech VRO "no oil" warnings???

Short, continuous horn pulses which my manual says is a no oil warning. Tank is full, plumbing is new as is VRO pump. I re-used the pump electrical sensor from the old pump to match my harness as the new one had the 3 conductor plug instead of my newer 4 conductor plugs. (Manual says this is a no-no but looks the same physically and mounts right up)
My factory manual isn't very clear on this issue and I'm unclear if the signal is telling me my tank is empty or the sensor on the pump isn't sensing oil?? Both seem unlikely based on being new units.
Breaking in new/rebuilds with 50:1 in the tank so I'm safe but want the alarms functional.
Thanks guys.

I think that is oil flow. There is also a low oil one, right, then to much vaccuum on the fuel line, and to hot. I have a system check tach so it tells me which one it is and I get a hideous tone.

Have you verified its pulling oil from the tank?

Gary if you got a vro pump with a 3 wire end that is an old pump they have had 4 wire for years. I would do the test with the clear hose and count the pulses.
Low oil in tank is a beep every 20 to 30 seconds, no oil thru the pump is on/off/on.

Thanks Al. Will do. BTW, the pump in question was new, still sealed in bag when I got it.

I believe that OMC went to the 4 wire pump design back in 1992 or so, then that would make your "new" 3-wire VRO pump around 20 years old or more.

Bought the "new" pump as new old stock from a closed down dealer. Going to do the pulse test today.

Also need to look at the pulse limiter although I don't think there is test for them is there?? The one's I've monkeyed with you can blow through them in both directions and I don't see how they can limit anything unless mine were all defective??

So today:
Did pulse test w/a clear hose on the oil side of pump. Manual says you should feel the pulses w/your finger over open end of hose and 6 - 8 pulses should drop oil in hose 3". I couldn't feel any pulses on my finger but could see the level drop slow/steady. Not like you would expect to see from "pulses" though?? Manual says if in doubt replace pulse limiter. Rode a 1/2 hr to my dealer for a shiny new $30. limiter. Installed it w/no change!
I also re-primed the line making sure I had no air in it. Motor runs perfect for 3 - 5 mins before alarm sounds. Definitely coming from the pump side as the alarm stops if I unplug it's harness. Stays quiet for 3 - 5 mins again after plugging back in then horn reactivates.
Exact same symptoms w/orig. pump before replacing w/my new/20 yr old pump. Guess it's possible that my orig. (from my parts box) was bad as is my new/20 yr old one but hate to spend $350. to guess. Not much else it could be though.
Don't think we can even get rebuild kits can we??

If this is your motor do yourself a favor and plug the oil side and disconnect the alarms. Sooner or a later a VRO will cost you a powehead. I was an OMC tech for many years and saw more than one VRO that shouted the alarms off for no reason. Even a glitch in the charging system can set the silly thing off.

I think you need to put the right pump on it. Sell the other one on Ebay, or go straight premix. I hate having alarms go off, my anti-syphon valve started causing mine to go off right after I got my boat, and I took that sucker out and put in a brass elbow instead.
