I have an old offshore racer with twin racing mercury 2.5's.
I recently snapped a rod in one of the engines.

The engine is counter rotating, but my question is my mechanic said the engine actually turns in a counter rotation, but I thought that just the lower unit turns counter rotating and the power heads are the same.
Which is it? the engine is a 1993 model.

P.S if anyone has a long block ready to drop in, Im interested.
Thanks in advance.

WELCOME to Scream and Fly:

Most of the older motors that were counter rotaters had a bright yellow washer on the top of the flywheel as well as the ring gear was .100" smaller in diameter with finer teeth and a different starter bendex ( teeth )... Right hand turning motors had blue washer....

The yellow painted washer was a quick way to determine lefty or righty turning engines.. And if I'm not mistaken the motor ran "backwards" ...

But an easy way for you to confirm rotation would be to hit the starter on the known righty motor and observe the rotation direction then next hit the starter of the suspect lefty and observe what way the flywheel spun...

Again welcome to the site...
