View Full Version : OMC/BRP V4 torque

I could use more torque for water skiing than my 93 Johnson 100 V4. It pulled me out last year with a 17" pitch prop, but would not pull my brother out on one ski even with a 15" prop.

I know a 2L looper would be better. What about the 1.7L motors? When did the 1.7's replace the 2L?

Thanks

you could start by verifying and maybe bumping up your WOT ignition timing. if your linkage is at all sticky and your not getting full advance as soon as you "gun" it you are loosing a lot of midrange torque. disassemble clean and regrease all the pivot parts of the throttle and timing linkage. use a lightweight grease not "axle grease". it thats all ok trying increasing the max ignition advance 1-2 degrees.

I have already verified the throttle linkage, but thanks. I buy lake gas as the tank won't take me as far as I can go, so I think I'll leave the timing and compression alone.

David, in that engine size range there is not much more you can do. That 100ci engine is torquey but it's not a V6.

My suggstions as follows:

-Cheap and reliable: Find a used/blown up 150 crossflow V6 and replace the V4. You know who rebuilt the boat, it will handle it with ease. That boat had a V6 Mercury 200 on it for many years before I got it. The 150 OMC will provide more than enough torque for skiing and family use and it will be very reliable.

-Less cheap but still reliable, and cooler: Find a 60-degree loop V6 and install that. Better fuel economy than the crossflow V6 and yet still very torquey and super reliable.

Either way, you will come out in the end spending very little, as your crossflow V4 will net you a healthy dollar when you sell it.

Glad to see you're still enjoying the boat.

PS: The looper V4 is not the answer. Great engine, but 365 lbs and 110 (or 122) cubes and 120/140 hp vs. 396 lbs. and 149 cubes (150/175 hp) doesn't even come close.
