View Full Version : What toasted my 280?

My 280 scored up #5 piston last year. During reassembly yesterday I found some junk clogging the vacuum line to the Bosch fuel regulator. When it failed it just lost power quickly after a 8 mile run. When this happened I backed off throttle and checked all gauges including fuel pressure and nothing was off. I idled to bank and pressure stayed good.

Would a clogged vacuum line on reg cause a lean or rich condition?

Some of this same crud appears to be on the vacuum line to my MAP sensor, not causing a blockage but does concern me that some of this junk may affect it's function as well. Could a malfunctioning MAP cause a lean condition as well? From what I understand stronger vacuum here causes it to get leaner?

Anyone know the Bosch part number so I don't have to spend $150.00 for Merc box?

If the line plugged with high vac applied to the regulator it could run lean at wot. Send you injectors to Brucato if you need any replaced he sells at a good price.

Had injectors cleaned and adjusted by Razorback Marine, a few were low but didn't have any major issues.

If the line to the regulator were clogged it seems to me it would pull less vacuum on the regulator causing the pressure to rise, therefore richening the motor. Same for the ecu

Same for the ecu

At idle, it may be a little rich, but at speed I think it's the opposite. I always know when mine is clogged, because when I mat the throttle the motor stumbles and will even die occasionally. I'm assuming it's because the ECU can't add the fuel fast enough becuase it's not getting an accurate vaccuum pull read...

9 out of 10 engines I tear down have the grease looking gunk in the air port of the regulator...Its very common and didn't cause your failure.

Try Brucato for injector cleaning and calibration next time you'll be amazed how much your performance and fuel economy will increase..
