Going up to Ohio to see him in a couple days. My Mom turned ninety last November.
I am a lucky guy to still have both my parents at this age and especially both in excellent health. They both still drive!
Told the old man one of our last visits, "I know you can still kick my ass but I don't think you can catch me any more".
When up for my Mom's 90th, Dad and I did a day trip in his Buick ;) Did the 2 1/2 hr trip from Columbus to Lake Erie to snoop around our old stomping grounds. (water was still hard)
May have been the 1st time I drove one of his cars w/his knowledge :p
Course he smoked his damn pipe the whole way there, and the whole way back.
Think how long he'd live if he listened to the experts
Fun now too in that I can let some of my old trouble maker stories slip and he laughs instead of chasing me.
Thanks Dad, Can't imagine where I'd be without your guidance.

Yep.
Was telling my Mom that since we are staying with them this trip that will be the first night I've spent under their roof since Dad gave me a suitcase for high school graduation in 1977! Some kind a crap about "when under our roof" ;)
Learned a lot from the old man. Many, many spooky stories of 3 week boat trips on the Great Lakes for our vacations. Learned 2 things from those trips. #1. if the captain doesn't show fear, neither will the crew. #2. (and more important) if the 1st mate ain't happy, ain't no one happy!

....Ya know when I was younger (like most of us) I thought my Dad didn't have a clue to what he was talking about...... it's now that I am a father that I realize just how smart he was. I bet you have some great stories about vacations and other things.......... I always like to remind my Dad of things he has forgotten over the years ......... gets him to remembering and talking of stuff even I had forgotten about. Good times Gary !

My Brother in Law just pulled a car trailer with his Fully Restored Model A all the way to Mexico Missouri so that for His Dad's 100th birthday he could drive around the Model A on his old postal route that he drove in the same car back in the 30's. His Dad enjoyed it but got very tired.....

Cool story.
My parents still live in their own house, cut their own grass, maintain their garden and land scaping etc. Always winning awards for the yard but it is catching up to them and my Dad will not do well w/o that outlet. He gave one of his neighbors crap last winter for shoveling his walk for him :)

Lucky you,Gary, enjoy the moments. My favorite song [one of them] is ''The Cat's In the Cradle'' Remember times when my Dad would call and I'd be too busy to talk[listen],and now I go the cemetary and talk, but I'm not sure he's listening. Life is too short, and you're lucky you still have time!! May God bless!

you may not realize how special this is right about now, but power down on helping these people. I lost my dad at 47. he was an only child, so when it came time to deal with my grandparents I was on my own, except for people who had a card in the game. Grandpa was 96, had women in their 60's thinkin,,,, , then along comes Keefy. seems like one will go before the other, take care of them. it's your duty. there are so many PREDATOR'S out there, you know where I'm going. God bless you and your family, do the right thing. fun out
( and i'm so serious,I tried to eliminate the smilly face.)

Good stuff Gary ! I am lucky enough to have my Dad living next door to me . He's 84 and slowing down some so I get to keep my eye on him . We still disagree on things but he has been great to me over the years and a wonderful grandfather for my kids . Enjoy your vacation with him !

Yep, and thanks guys. He taught me a lot.
Both parents are of course watching their diets etc. but the Old Man still likes to step to the plate and thump his chest from time to time. Last time in town Cheryl and I were Jones'n for White Castles. You know, sliders. We were at my parents house and mentioned this in front of them and they decided to go to the one right by their house
They have a jalapeno cheese burger that I love. I ate 6 and dad had 4 :p My sisters freaked when I told them that story.
Fun, I have two sisters and a brother that live 2 mls away from them. One sister is a R.N. The guilt of living so far away is getting worse though. Only good is they are talking about snow birding it down here.
Tom, very cool. My introduction to boating was sleeping on the back deck of Dad's 18' plywood Fancy Craft (with 4 of us on board) with twin 25's :) one was a '54 w/electric start and one was a '53 w/o.
That was on Lake Erie.

Isn't that the truth. I took care of my Granmother until she passed at 94. She was still sharp as a tack mind wise. Wish I could say the same about my Mom.
