I just changed my 3L Torqumaster over to a Sportmaster but my owner's manual does not cover the Sportmaster LU. So what is the proper proceedure for checking the oil level for the correct level?
Thanks in advance....

No way to check a present level that I know of... I think it holds 23 oz, but you can add fluid in the lower plug until it run from the top hole... Usually about how much leaks out by time you get the lower plug back in is pretty good... If it has too much it will purge some from the small vent hole for a trip or three after the fluid change until it finds a happy place...

No. I am shure there is a more scientific way. An example would be to position the motor level or trimmed up, and then remove the fill screw and fill it up to capacity.

I always install the vent plug before removing the fill fitting, seems to loose less fluid this way . GUIDO

And when you do this what is the trim position of the motor?

WRONG ! . Mr Kiser has outlined the standard , proper procedure to refill the case . Drain and refill from the bottom drain / fill screw till oil flows out the top vent screw ....then install the top / vent screw , remove pump fill fitting and re-install bottom fill screw . All this takes place with the engine / gearcase level . Do not be alarmed by losing a small amount of oil in the process .
Approx. how much gear fluid does a SM case hold?

FS, my Sporty takes about 22 oz's during a normal change. However after I did a re-seal and cleaned the case with the carrier out it took considerably more.

Stupid question - why fill from the bottom until oil comes out of the top when you could just put the bottom plug in and fill to overflow thru the top?

because it forces any air out of the case and allows the fluid to fill in all the oil passages. just my $.02

You don't need the case packed tight with fluid..especially on the 3 liters. The little bit ya lose when you unscrew the pump is perfectly fine cause if ya got too much it can bleed out through the seals if it gets really hot.

Do not over fill the case! Let some actually drain out, you're better off.

Try it sometime !! Airlock will prevent this from being possible . It's done this way ( bottom up ) for good reasons mentioned .
