I have a 2001 150 EFI Merc. I'm trying to get the power head off to put it on a 20'' midsection. What is the easiest way to pull the power head? My problem is that the powerhead is stuck on are there any trick to getting them off. Also the 20'' midsection that I have is from an older 200 and the exhaust is different and it has open exhaust holes. Will this affect the EFI's running? If someone could give me some kind of input I would very much appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

Make sure you have all the nuts off. I know that sounds dumb but I have seen it happen. It shouldn't be stuck unless someone has used sealer on the gaskets. I use grease on most gaskets. Much easier to work on next time.

Hope this helps BUT there are 10 attachment nuts that hold the power head on the tuner adapter on most V-6 Mercury outboards...

Yeah I have checked the nuts on the studs a couple of times. I think that it may be corrosion that is holding it on but I 'm not positive. Thank you for the input Jay.

My 3 litre had corrosion on the studs and was a pain to get off, I could get it to move slightly but even with plenty of PB blaster over a few days and lifting with quite a bit of pressure with the engine hoist it still wouldn't come off without some heat.

Yep the studs will get nasty, heat and maybe cutting them - these guys pull them more often than us regular guys LOL I didn't think mine would be bad either but the guy had to use like an impact driver thing to get one moving and alot of heat

I did 2 in 1 day, both salt water motors using this procedure, put steel bars under an engine crane, chain the mid to the bars and apply pressure with the crane, it will seperate.

I see this is an older thread, but it is a current problem for me.
I pulled all of the bolts/nuts and NADA darn thing, heat, PB and tying it to the hoist at both ends did nothing but waste energy. I finally cut the studs between the exhaust adapter and powerhead. You might be able to see that the long studs are cut off and the steering arm is really rusted.
Now to begin the drilling of the stud ends. My latest concern is the poppet valve and corrosion.

try putting alum.block under rear studs(studs under heads) and using nuts as "jacks" to push studs up. try heat -in aera of rear studs and prybars between mid and front half of c/case. good luck-th

Thanks M808, The picture doesn't really show the condition of those nuts on the studs in the driveshaft housing. They were driven up, crooked and stripped on the studs. I used a rivet gun of incredible power (read 4 times more than equivalent air hammer) and nothing. The power head is now off and sitting on the work bench. waiting for my new engine hoist ring (borrowed one sent home) to get to those but all the other studs broken off or cut off are now done and with no troubling damage!
