Rubrail ?? Don't know what it's called but the boat builders seal or protect raw edges of fiberglass with it...My STV RR has a strip all the way around the cockpit area and this strip keeps falling off or partially off..I usually just push it back on the edge but is there some way to keep this strip in place..If I wanted to replace the strip what is it called and where would you get the product ? Realize this isn't in keeping with the fiberglass or composite theme but didn't know where else to post...Any advices will be appreciated

Thanks

I don't know why it keeps falling out, maybe the holder is damaged or the rubber just got old and flexible. talk to rickracer, he probably carries what you need, I just got rubrail for my hst from him, through my brother MXZ.

As I said, don't know what you call this protection but it simply covers a raw fiberglass edge..A long continuous banding made of rubber or plastic...slips over the exposed inside edge of the outer hull..inside the cockpit area...as I see it nothing holds it on but a tight fit..slips over the edge to I suppose keep people from cutting themselves...shaped like a channel so I guess you could just 'glue' it in place..

I bought some of that trim from JC Whitney several years ago. I don't remember what it was called. 3M weather strip adhesive will keep it in place.

I can get a price for you if you'd like. The price on the image is list and S&Fers don't pay anywhere near list.

It is used on the inside of your boat. If it doesn't grab on tight enough, glue it on with some windshield sealant ot similar product. I actually used the bigger version for a rubrail on my Vector a long time ago.

What did you use for your Vector? I'm looking for a rubrail for mine. I went to the Mcmastercarr web site and looked there but couldn't find what I need. Do you have a link for it?

I went to McMaster Carr and searched for 'edge protectors'

When the screen changed I selected 'Trim molding and push in edge trim' from the drop down menu..The push on protection was what I was looking for..shown above that was the rub rail type guard you may be looking for

What Jones said, I can't get you a link cause it will just be Mcmastercarr.com. It doesn't change when you do the search. Sorry.......

I just found what I need in their web site. Now to find out what material to get. Did you get the silicone, neoprene or EPDM? The EPDM says it has excellent resistance to weathering.

dig back in my old memory. I am guessing it was part # 8451A13. But I wonder if part # 24175K45 might be better. it's harder and has an aluminum core. Call them up and see if they will send you an engineering sample. Tell them you are shopping for 2000 feet for a project at work or somehting like that.

I checked that out and they won't work for a Vector. They have the wrong mounting shape. The two halves on the Vector stick straight out.

The ones from McMaster should work good if I can just figure out which material to get and how to hold them on tight.

i would go with epdm because its "hard like a tire tread"?:D

really the best out of the choices.

3m 1300L or trim and mold adhesive thinned with toluene works great. you got to have CLEAN surfaces though.

apply like contact cement let it dry then activate with MEK or Toluene.

once it touches your done though.

The only bad thing about EPDM is that it only comes in two different styles. And neither one of them is what I need. Thanks for the glueing tips though. I was thinking of using 3M 5200 but it just takes too long to dry. :)

5200 rules!! didnt think of that one.

they make black quick setting 5200.

Windshield Sealant on mine. Comes in a caulking gun tube. Put a small bead inside the rubrail. Don't get it on the part that clamps on the hull and deck. Push it on and let it dry. Never came off. If you bang up a section you can still cut it and peal that section off and replace it. It doesn't seam up bad at all.

Yes, urethane window sealant is nasty stuff. I think it is about the same as 3m 5200, but black. It will glue just about anything. Now they have fast dry in about 10 minutes or so. Gotta use the whole tube quick. Would highly recommend the windshield sealer urethane, what speed is up to you. They often duct tape the glass in to dry.

Did find this place here, not knowing if they have anything useful http://www.minorrubber.com/extrude.htm
