Holley Fuel Pump Press.

I just bought a red holley fuel pump..will shortening the spring lower the output press???..and if so then about how short should it be??? I ran one of these on a jet boat without a regulator and didnt have any problems. I havnt tried it on the merc yet but everyone seems to say to have only 3.5lbs with it..It says 7lbs on the box..
