Whats the best way to check the timing on this motor and what should the max timing at WOT be set at.
Some one said to just unhook the arm from the timer base push the timer base to full advance and verifiy once the engine is warm. I tried the after verifing TDC on #1 but it does not seem to work. Anyone got a better way without putting it in the water?

Some of those flywheels had 2 timing grids. Take some typewriter white out and make sure you have a mark at the BTDC spec. on the correct grid. It may be some trouble and take another person to drive the boat but I would check the timing running down the river. Don't know the timing number off the top of my head.

I've got a manual but it's at the shop, best I can remember on my 89' 150 evinrude total timing was 32*, I've been told by many sources to subtract 4* when setting the total timing at idle with the timing arm disconected and at full advance as the timing advance will grow with rpm, hope this helps and i'll check the timing spec for your motor in the AM.

The timing for a base 150 is 32 degrees. The timing for a 150S is 30 degrees. Timing is set at 5000 rpm's when in forward gear. Check the timing on both #1 and #2, then set for which ever has the highest degree of advance. You can set the timing when the boat is on the trailer. Back the boat down partially into the water at the boat ramp so that the water intake holes in the lower unit are fully submerged. Crank it up.
