View Full Version : Yamaha Tech where to buy a Yamaha 2-stroke rebuild kit?

This is for a 1985, 40hp, that's so clean you could eat off of it. It was owned by a literal "little old lady from pasadena", took meticulous care of it. And it ran perfectly for me for two years... until I ruined it

I'm not sure what happened to mine yet, but it went from purring like a sewing machine, to unable to idle at all. Just did compression checks yesterday: 30,40,30, top to bottom. Not sure if it was oil injection failure, or overheat due to water pump failure. I did run the oil tank into the yellow light range before filling it... but yellow is just the warning that you ought to add oil. Red is the bad one, right? This never saw red. IIRC, based on reading S'n'F, this Yamaha oiling system does not have the mixed reputation that OMC VRO or the plastic gear Merc system, rather it has a good reputation. Do I have that right? As for the water pump, I admit, I never checked or changed it, [I know, I konw], but the telltale was always working, and I probably put no more than 30 hours on it in two years.

This motor has never seen anything but light duty nearshore fishing on a Sport 13 Boston Whaler.

While I'm in there, did Yamaha ever make a stainless shift shaft as a replacement part for the rust-prone stock shift shaft? What other "while I'm in there's" should I address?

Well, have a look at the impeller, and you will see what shape it is in. It should not be too difficult to determine.

The Yamaha oil injection system is much more reliable.

However, it is not failure proof as it is vented and moisture can get into the system. In the tank on the engine, there is a little rubber tit at the bottom where sludge is supposed to collect so that you can get it out. If you ran it down to yellow, you may well have encountered several years worth of sludge sitting at the bottom of the tank, and that stuff does not lubricate as well as oil...

(This is based on the V6 oil injection system - I assume that the 90 hp is similar)



While I'm in there, did Yamaha ever make a stainless shift shaft as a replacement part for the rust-prone stock shift shaft?


They did for the V6. Not sure about the 90 hp.

oil pumps on early small 3cyl yams all fail.

sooo, any tips as to where to buy a rebuild kit? the dealer who is not even local? i'd rather give my business to an s'n'f vendor.

need to check rod & crank bearings. if lack of oil,bearing failure? with rebuild-change oil check valves, OR get rid of oiling system and premix.

as to not flake out on this thread, i feel like i ought to report that in the end, there is nothing wrong with my motor. apparently, an unlikely and unlucky sequence of events transpired that could be a lesson to us all. i build my own automotive race engines and i fell for this...

ok, the low compression readings were due to a faulty borrowed compression tester from vatozone, and the poor running was due to water or separated alcohol contamination in the carbs, which has _never_ happened to me before, so i never thought about it. it might have even been a little rain water, because i had left the tank vent open during the biggest winter rainstorms we've seen in a while here in southern california, with hardly any gas in the tank. the vented tank cap was filled with water many times this winter, and i do not use a water separating fuel filter on this utility/fishboat/whaler. i found out about the bad compression tester by using my good one, which i had lent out to someone else. then it was a simple matter of rebuilding the carbs. now it idles like a sewing machine and rips when i open her up. all three cylinders are 125-125-125.

still, i'm always glad to know where to go to get rebuild parts if i _need_ to.
