Go with the lab band. I cant believe anyone would recomend bypass before lab band unless someone was in a life threatening way. My wife had gastric bypass years ago and still has complications from it. Gallbladder went. She now has an iron defecincy and has to have montly injections. Malabsorbtion of vitamins. Now Hypoglycemic list goes on. She looked at having it reversed and getting a lab band which has none of those side effects.

Yep, My sister had it done and she's still a mess with all kinds of complications.
I agree if your contimplating that route go lab band but, unless your seriously obese I wouldn't even think of it.;)

One of my major problems is Barrett's esophagus. I have had it for about ten years now. As I understand from my doctors the only way I can stop anymore erosion is to have the bypass. They say the lab band still allows the acids to come up into the esophagus. God knows I am not having an easy time making this decision. Thanks for the input

part of the routine with lab band is being on an acid reducer if your having a problem with reflux. If you watch when your eating it can be controlled, usually only a problem at night when you go to bed. Cant eat to late or the food sitting on top of the band will give you problems when your laying down.

Also if the lap band doesnt work you can always get the bypass. Not so easy the other way around.

I have been on the meds for acid for a lot of years. My doctor is worried about being on it so long because they don't know what happens after 20 years. I know I am not supposed to eat to late but I am my own worst enemy. I have been dieting but even that is discouraging because they say only 2% of obese people can actually lose the weight and maintain it. I really wish this was an easy decision.
You have to get SERIOUS with your eating , I have never been obese, but I consider my self to be on a diet my whole life, of course everyone veers off time to time , but I never wanted to get Diabetes like my parents had , self imposed sickness ( type 2) My uncle had his lower leg removed because of diabetes. I know it is easy to say , and hard to accomplish but everything seems to be that way.
We all tend to be our worst enemy, Become more active, best of luck.

Cuda I hear you. So far I have been fortunate not to get diabetes or heart problems. The biggest issue I have is more hereditary. the pre cancerous tissue in my esophagus is really the big problem. There is no cure for that only try to stop the reflux. I have had the problem with reflux since I was about 14. I was very thin then. Guess I am just getting discouraged with myself, I do stay very active and eat healthy food but I am losing the battle.

Dude, ya said a great mouthful..(pun intended!;))..of "real speak." My Grandpa, lost a leg, long ago, but was active, but we think it was Diabetic caused, and this was 6 decades ago too, little known then. Everybody still thinks, watch high blood pressure, chlorestoral, but if ya don't do a doc physical, later years, you will never know. I'm 60, 61 June, and my fasting before, was kissing 100, 3 years ago, then went 110. Bought a meter, and prick myself occasionally, as the last physical, it was "Pre-diabetic", at 120. Think my problem is ..azz sitting/sleeping to damn much. I been retired (yep, lucky), 17 years, 4 boats, 6 bikes, and 5'10 1/2, 205, so it aint weight. AND, lets not get into the "diet", which really consist mostly pizza and beer! I know its living hell to "moderate"..but..,oh well..its like said. I came from a bunch of party parents, relatives, and hard to break the "mold" made. And parents both lived into the 80's, so actually afraid, to "break the mold"! Life..age..a SOB to acquire, and hell to maintain!

Not sure. I dont count fat grams. I do eat mostly low fat foods. The nutritionist said I was drinking to much coffee, not enough water and not eating enough food during the day. I knew coffee was a diuretic but didn't know it was curbing my appetite.

Coffee/beer..(to me)..REPLACE FOOD! Try doing a cup of water, then the coffee... beer?, do same. And toss in some "snacks", not much, just something in the stomach. Not "Cheetos", but some will recommend something....comes to eating right, I'm the last person to comment!

You need to have the Barrets looked after ASAP. I recently lost a Brother to Esaphageal cancer and it explodes like a bomb when it happens. I have reflux too and am on Nexium. I just can not eat too much or eat too late or I pay dearly. With a little self-control I am fine.

My friend has been battling Esaphageal cancer for 5 years now. His went from conception to stage 4 in three weeks. After a couple of surgeries and radiation and chemo he is holding his own. He is on chemo for life now, for how ever long that is. Not an easy disease to recover from. Good luck

I had heartburn since I was 8 years old, same as my father. I tried a low fat diet about 20 years ago to lose some weight, magically, the heartburn was gone and has not come back. Try and stay about 40-50 grams of fat per day, and see what happens.
My father had Barrets, and ended up with cancer, but luckily it was caught early, and he's been fine for years.
Seems there's 10 nightmare gastric bypass stories for every success story, I wouldn't consider it until absolutely every other option has been exhausted.

Yes I have 3 doctors all telling me the same thing and that is to do it. Mostly from the docs I hear is that I must follow the plan after it is done. All though this thread would tend to make most readers move away from having it done the comments from the ones who have had it are very encouraging. So far not one person who has actually had it has told me they regret it infact they have all told me they would do it again. I am planning on going to a support group meeting to see what the actaul patience from the surgeon say.

Hey Mark,
Just came across this. I don't have any advise on this for you but I will say I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. You have always struck me as one of the good guys so I hate to see you going through any of this. As with a lot of things it sucks to get older. The $hit I put my body through as a young man is now catching up to me at a very quick rate. Always here for you to bounce idea's off of. I bet you'll make the right decision for yourself!

How many grams of fat do you eat per day?
Sunapee, I cannot speak for the Barretts, but the least painful way for me to loose weight is to watch fat grams. I stayed on a 20-25g per day diet for about 3 months and lost 19 lb painlessly. I ate plenty, just had to watch what I ate....I don't do hungry very good!!
Keep a dialogue going here, lots of good people and positive energy to draw from. I wish you the best!

If you have three doctors telling you the surgery is necessary I would think thats a go. Just got to stick with the maintanence that goes with it.

Thanks everyone for the advice and best wishes. Chris I appreciate the prayers:thumbsup: I to have not been so good to myself and now that I am getting older things are catching up. I do believe I am ready to make the necessary life changes as I am tired of the way it has been going and would like to feel good again. I want to thank you all for your input, I have been mulling over this for about 7 months now and the closer it gets to surgery the more my nerves are at attention.

It's not the fat that is your problem. It is all the crap carbs that most people eat. Spend the money, download this book and read it. If you have doubts contact Laker, he has just started this way of life. Ask him how he feels.

Many didn't get the chance..and I would never, trade my crazy youth, for a "painless", old age. Gonna happen anyway, RIGHT!

There are 4 people that I work with that have had the bypass done and the results have been dramatic. All have lost many pounds with very few complications. One lady who had the procedure done about 8 years ago has changed her eating habits back to the bad and has actually begun to gain weight again. Just goes to show the importance of eating right even post surgery. One thing that puzzles me about this bypass thing is that you have to follow a diet plan and eat a very limited amount of food per meal. Well.....if you have the determination and resolve to follow that diet after the surgery, why not start following it now and see if you can lose the weight w/o putting your body through that surgery???? Just a thought.

People after the by pass have actually stretched out the little stomach into a full size one again. They are now putting lab bands on the "second" stomach. It still comes down to changing your eating habits. They by pass and band are just tools to help but they both can be circumvented.
