I got a little hapy with the hammer. This is mostly for transom bolting, I used 1/2" bolts

Both gr 5 &8 broke in the thread faster than I thought they would. A good example of a stress riser.

The Gr.8 was harder to bend than the 5 but it necked down compared to the 5.

The set screw wasn't as long so was more like shear, even then it didn't bend but just went. To bad I didn't put it in the other way around.
I expected the GR.8 5 /16" screw to bend easier because it's skinnyer, it didn't.

Finally the B-7 stud bent very nicely, I by chance stopped just as one thread had cracked. The other thread is white from starting to go. Notice it didn't break compared to either GR. 5 or 8.
I also found that B-7 is a high temp, high strength fastener.
L-7 is the same but for low/ normal temps, down to minus 150 F.

I called Hughes fasteners about a grade 8 Stainless steel bolt and this is what he suggested.
304 SS. Spec is A-193 or A-194 Supposed to be close to a gr 8
The spec means it's made this way is more than just a 304 ss bolt.
And finally a pretty good info PDF. I would suggest right clicking and downloading it, then reading what ever. PDFs are generally annoyingly slow. There is something of interest on it although there is some mighty boring stuff that needs to be skipped over too.

They (fastenall) also mentioned a different SS bolt.

nice research there techno, now does that apply to vibration loads? the only experiance i ever have with bolts is when i'm replacing drain bolts in roof drains.hate when other roofers don't use ss bolts,is they use anyothers they always brake, then you have to tap and die them,a real pain in the a$$

Decided to try the B7 after arguing with me about using it in my stud kits. Works pretty good doesn't it?

do you have a job?

did you invent the time machine?

where is all this time coming from?

i need some!:D

vector mike I wasn't arguing, just questioning how strong something needs to be.
I was surprised the B-7 didn't break like the grades did though.

My job title is classified. (classified as what, I don't know).
I have a job- thats where I beat on the bolts.
I didn't invent the time machine, someone in the future beat me to it.

As for #2 & 4 "time is relative".
It is a known fact that there are more minutes in an hour when standing in a line. There are less when doing something you like.
