I am running a 50 HP 1987 VRO Johnson outboard and at WOT it runs now fully trimmed out (Hole 4)to 6200 RPM with no propcavitation other than in extreme cornering and going through some wake
In my book 5500 is way to high as I understand that the max revs is 5500 rpm.
Would some one in the know be able to tell me if 5500 is the correct max revs, please.
I have today bought and installed a 11 3/4 x 17 propellor instead of the 12 1/4 x 15 standard one.
This should knock off 5-600 rpm I hope.
run a 4.8mtr runnabout (Sun ray inc) with bimini up.

Motor has a stabeliser on it and proppellor (old one) does not cavitate at WOT.
Will try out new set up tomorow if the ocean is calm enough!

As I recall the RPM range for wide open throttle is 5000-6000 rpm

Well I tried it and it is sweet, with bimini up and a choppy/swelly sea into the breeze still get to 5300rmp 32mph on my old cappilary speedo.
with the iold prop I would pull 5800rpm in similair conditions.
The holeshot is still very good.
The old prop has seen better days.
Still good for a spare!
25mph at 4000rpm, what a difference!
trolling is also nice and smooth, you can feel the blades bite into the water!
Sadly did not catch anything.
If someone can still tell me the max revs for these engines that would be appreciated.
googled myself silly, but cannot find the awnser.

I don,t have the answer, but put another body or two in the boat and you will be lugging the engine quite well thanks.

I have the same motor, mine is a 1980 60 but crank rated. I'll look it up when I get home. The engine should at the top of the rpm range when light (half fuel, driver only).
