From what I remember (i could be wrong), the outboard pumps have internal valving for object strikes as where the sterndrive pumps don't (the object strike valving is in the rams for sterndrives). As for canister vs plastic resevoir, that's just a change in style.

The older heavy duty "racing" pumps had the canister type reservoir on the bottom of the pump, they used them for the K-plane trim tabs as well as the racing outboards.

My newest "racing" outboard, the 250xs, came with a plastic reservoir style pump.

Thanks ! I have been through many I.O pumps am=nd under checkball is a spring just for that purpose ( in case you strike something ) Also know for sure bravo and tab pump have different size rotor which is the act pump . Is a new trim tab pump and OB pump the same ? would make sense much less voluum than two IO rams
