Is a fuel pump something to invest in, Im not sure mine is flowing enough, it seems that the bowls go dry or at least don't stay full. After a few min of running the motor, the primer ball is soft and can be squeezed like 3 times before the bowls are full again. It seems to starve a few carbs. Is a pump a a wise upgrade?? If so which one is widley used?

why not just rebuild the pump on the engine? keeps things simple, and most of the time provide plenty of fuel. also, primer bulbs can create problems in this area as well, use ONLY oe manufactured primer bulbs(ie omc, merc, yamaha), the reliability of the aftermarket ones is poor

I dont know if there's a problem yet, but it seems that the bowls go dry while running on the hose. If I pump the primer ball up and give it gas you can clearly see fuel entering the carbs, a few min later if you give it gas the upper carbs seem to be getting less fuel than before, you cant see it going in. If i repump the primer ball and refill the bowls, you can see the fuel going in again. I drained the upper bowls after running it and there was only like a table spoon of fuel in them, not much at all. The primer ball is a brand new OMC, I took the pump apart and everything seems to be good inside. Just looking for options if it seems to be a issue.

why not just temporarily hook up a fuel pressure guage in the fuel pump discharge line, at idle you should see 2-3 psi

I have a Holley Red on my Evinrude 235 primer bulb stays hard and make sure you get a regulator to turn it down. I also had to wire up a switch to the dash to turn the pump on and off but not a big deal

I would get red of the primer bulb and get an electric pump.
Carter has a pump which is the pump of choice for outboard use since it delivers appropriate pressure and does not have the tendency to stick that the Holley pumps have.

90% percent of fuel primer bulbs going softer than normal is due to suction side of fuel system restrictions. Fuel draw side systems start at tank vent to vent hose to fitting to pickup tube screen(remove this) to pickup tube to siphon valve to any other inferior 3/8 hose barb fitting (use omc brand that has a close to true 3/8 inner diameter) to primer bulb. Get the picture? Mercury and omc service manuals spell this out in detail in their service manuals and how to check.

I for the life of me can't figure out (other than cost savings) why Merc still uses the primer bulb system.......I mean, that's some pretty old tech.............
