I have been offered a Bob's Machine Shop Hydraulic Jack Plate. It is three years old and has had a Johnson V8 300hp on it for those three years. The model is Ultra hd with 4" set back, made for 300hp. When looking at the web site they tell me that model Ultra hd jack plate is for 300hp V6.

With the V8 being another 50lbs heavier and with more torque has anyone run one of these plates with a V8. Any recommendations would be appreciated?

Don't want the bastard falling off the back now do I.:nonod:

Thanks in anticipation.

In the words of the immortal Bruce Springsteen, "IS ANYBODY ALIVE OUT THERE"?????????????

Anyway someone else pointed out a U tube clip where a V8 Evinrude falls off the back of a boat. It was bolted to a Bob's Machine Shop Hydraulic Jack Plate which has disintergrated. I think this has answered my question.

Thanks anyway.

I have seen 2 Bobs Hydra-Jack plates with V8s on them that had cracks at the top of the side plate. One was on a 21' Cougar (similar boat to the Eliminator in the first video), that somebody had welded up the crack (was about an inch long). Scary stuff, I have no idea what happened to either one. It shows the importance of reading the ratings on the plate - I had a Hydra-Jack with a V4 on it for about 6 years and it worked fine.

I have a Stainless Marine on mine. I wish it had more setback but i think I will use a fixed setback for the setback and keep the stainless marine since they are very strong.

Looking at the Bob's Marine Web Site I see that they now have an Extreme Plate which is rated for the V8. When my guy purchased his plate some three years ago, the one he purchased was the heaviest they built at that time. Possibly with a few failures they de-rated their heavy duty plate and designed and built a new stronger Extreme version???

Knowing what I intend doing with my V8 and boat I will need the Extreme version.:D:D:thumbsup:

Cheers Matt, that is just the sort of feedback I was looking for. I have never even seen a Jack Plate in the flesh so must rely on the opinion of you guys (professionals).;)

I was wondering which bob's to get my dad has the ultra HD one for his 250XS which seems to work good that one is around 850.00 but the extreme is 1100.00 i was wondering if the V8 needed the extreme i guess that tells me yes.

I am going to look into the Stainless marine and the CMC.

On a side note i only dream of running my OMC V8 gear case that high. I guess i would need the sport master to be able to do that.

It certainly tells me yes and I have just received a reply from Bob's Machine Shop and they also say V8 must have the extreme plate.

Talking of running the V8 high, I have the 20" Off Shore gear case on mine and my research would indicate that that case can be run high. Comment would indicate that the standard leg on the V8 shouldn't be run where it surfaces from time to time as this will destroy it. The engine I have coming also has a Bob's low water pick-up on it already. I can't wait for it to arrive here in NZ.:D:D:D

I have the offshore short mid on mine i think they are 23" and the long is 28". I already had gear case problems with the first case so i built another one out of spare parts i had from buying 2 parts motors. From what i have been told and seen you can not surface the stock OMC V8 case for very long it does not matter if you pin them or weld them. The only real fix is a custom drive shaft and adapter plate with a merc sporty.

Maybe some of the other guys can comment.

Ralph,
For what it's worth I had a Stainless Marine Box on mine when I bought it. I was not real happy with it because of it's smaller foot print and because a 3.0L hanging 15" back really put the load to it at the bottom. It sank into the bottom of the transom about 3/16". I went with the Hydro Dynamics Static Set Back (powder coated), it'll give you a much larger foot print and it's strong as hell, but I'd highly recommend that you provide the mesaurements to ensure the set back brackets lower portion clears the tunnel. Mine didn't by about 3/8" on each side, which is not the end of the world but if I had it to do again, I'd have supplied the measurements.
