First, do nothing! Reach down and pull the wall plug to do a hard shutdown on your computer. Restart the computer and immediately start tapping your finger on the F8 key to make it go into the boot menu. When the boot menu comes up, select the option for "Safe Mode with Networking". It will then boot up in the Safe Mode, but will look funny. When it is ready, Open your Browser [if you can], then go to MALWAREBYTES.ORG website and download their FREE Anti-Virus program. When it is finsihed, select "Run" and the Run a FULL SCAN. When it is finished, restart your computer normally.
If your Internet Explorer Browser will not connect to the Internet to download the Anti Virus, then go to the Internet Options Tab on your IE browser and then click on the Connections tab and unclick the Proxy Server box [which is how the virus keeps you from getting on the Internet to download an Anti Virus.

You will be amazed what you can solve without taking your computer to the local computer shop. I am also into computers here and there so should any computer issues arise in the future i will be more than happy to join the "rescue" team :)

ROFL.... About twice a week I pull this POS off someone's computer so it'll actually run. If there's anything else on the computer anti virus or anti malware wise, this crap will tangle with it and lock up the whole works, with no indication of what is wrong.
Avast free is almost as good as the good pay stuff, like Kaspersky and Computer Associates Avast with the upgrade (currently $30 for three computers for a year if you go for the loss leader) is pretty hard to beat with anything.
I just shot an MBR rootkit off a system. Kaspersky didn't even see it, Avast identified and located it, and RootKitBuster from Trend Micro fixed it.
I knew I was looking for a root kit because service diagnostics indicated a lot of web traffic with no obvious program or service originating it. Threads disappeared in the kernel, which makes sense because that's where the virus was.

Don't rootkits show a difference in the true system volume information?

What a rootkit does is install at such a low level that it is run before any anti-virus can start, then usually it puts hooks in the kernel so it steers everything around the anti-virus hooks. Then it either directly loads a non-registered resident module, or runs it's crap right out of the kernel below everything else. Nothing shows up in the task manager because it is operating outside the managed system. In order to work it's terror, it has to use system IO processes, and you can see the activity in a utulity called sysinternals ProcessExplorer. You still can't see or deal with the root program, but you can identify it's activity.
The one I shot out last week was very sophisticated, residing in the Master Boot Record on the hard drive. Another I shot out this week was easily shot out of the system by the Anti-virus scan from CD, but everything then quit. The registry had been modified to steer all executables through the trojan program. Of course it was on an engineering graphics workstation where just the licensing for all the stuff running on it would take hours to iron out, so I manually shot the troubles out of the registry.
I used to hate windows with a purple passion, but I've discovered that it's job security.

I have run rootkitrevealer before but never spent enough time to interpet the results. Is there a legend somewhere online where you can interpet the output? It is also a pain that you can't copy/paste the output from Rootkitrevealer so it can be googled.

I know this thread is a few months old but. My lap top (day before yesterday) without warning pops up with a screen MS removal tool. It performs a scan and says I have 72 viruses?? When I try to open any application a small box pops up that says " Warning: your computer is infected windows has detected spyware infection click this message to install the last update of windows security software".
When I do that another box pops up showing me order details 1 year @ $59.95, 2 years @ $69.95 or lifetime at $79.95. Then fill in all my credit card information etc.
I tried what JR posted in post #2 but the computer will not go into boot menus after the hard shutdown and restart??
Any suggestions?
Update. When I start the lap top and everything loads the screen is all blue but the windows/applications are there. I can get to the internet through Internet explorer but not through my AOL. I can open My Documents without any problems.
The wife just got the same thing on her computer. Subscribed.
