hey guys
i make some plans to build a backup mota for next year beside my little pro 2.0 mota

two are on sale localy here and i have to decide and buy one of this engines, because next year they are gone.

i can start with a 1997 fishing 2.5 steel bore block (non idle reliev) what has to be bored 030 for hi po pistons (one piston scuffed) and has to be ported to 260/280 drag spects and other mods what is necesarry to go up to that horsepower .

or second

i can start with a more exotic bridgeport (mod vp)efi chrome bore block(not nic) with good used chrome, rise the porting will be difficult because of chrome, only chest work porting and bottom area of exhaust ports.i think re chrome if available or re nic would be to expencive ? dont know the prices for that job.

annyway i have to rebuild all with new top pinned pistons, hipo bearings and so on

i am a carb guy and will keep my bored WH15 on this project like a pro carb drag class engine.

i personally feel saver with a steel bore 2.5........

maybee send this over to jay smith and let him do the balancing and porting work !!

what are your toughts ?

What hipo .030 pistons are there? I'm not aware of any besides vertex, which are not forged or top pinned.

no hipo pistons in the fishing mota jet,has stock ones now.
i have to bore the block for the new 030 pistons, would then go with the best piston available on the market for a steel bore fishing mota.if i buy this block from a budy ??
dont know what is all available on the piston marked ??

i mean "hipo" aftermarket, better then stock mercs or better then merc vertex, i tought about the coated pro marine ones ,if they are better... ok..... they are cast or the wiseco 3137S2 (http://www.wiseco.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ItemID=3137S2&ModelID=3092&ModelYear=1997&AppID=10564) /3137P2 (http://www.wiseco.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ItemID=3137P2&ModelID=3092&ModelYear=1997&AppID=10578) and send them to john marles for top pinning and lightening /balancing/angel cutting

but i heard about that not everybody is lucky with the wiseco's ?? down't know what happend ?? bad heat expansion or bad piston to bore clearence when to cold because of the merc raw water cooling ??
i have to resaerch !!

i got most of my racing car pistons from JE piston ,custom made to my spects in the past, but they do not build merc ones ;-(
i just start.... to get all information together what goes and will work well

what else is available ?? on the piston marked....for fishing mota's

Vertex is it, unless you keep it standard bore - then you can use Merc top pins, or wizards, which seem to be the best. DSRA pro/super stock guys have had very good luck with vertex - some spinning them over 10k rpm. I'd stay away from weisco's.

You could get Wizards in .024 and I think .044 over? Thats another option

i have checked wizards homepage and it does not show anny over bore 2.5 ones
only 2.4 will come soon in 030...

The piston on the left is the STOCK piston, standard weight and cut, and available from Pro Marine Parts or one of their dealers. (Pro Marine Parts 800-621-7761)

The MODIFIED Wizard piston pictured on right is the lightweight piston, cut and modified version,
available through the distributors listed at the
bottom of the page.

less thermal expansion. The piston above is cut with twin ring grooves, and weighs approximately 440 grams. Single ring pistons are available as well.

These factory finished and lightened pistons have a
thermal barrier non-stick coating by RaceKote.

Due to their popularity, titanium nitride rings are standard in our 2009 piston kits. (Chrome rings are still available upon request.)

Top pinned design (as pictured below)has proven successful for high RPM applications in the motorcycle and snowmobile
racing industry for many years.

The Mercury 2.4L piston is finally available with top pinned design, and piston rings for all cylinder sleeve types (iron, chrome, nickelsil), and standard or lightweight wrist pins. These pistons are available in standard bore size, and soon will be available in +.030 oversize.

Yea a few of the oversize 2.5 sets have been made, but I don't think they are readily "available" yet, if you know what I mean.....

Honestly, if you're going to just port a steel bore motor to "drag specs" and not put a 280/300 crank or chatfield rods in it, there's really no point in going to a hipo piston. The vertex pistons should serve you fine, and probably not be the weak point in the system.

DSRA pro/super stock guys have had very good luck with vertex
mach...

do they use fishing blocks in super stock ?what is there horsepower rating? 200+ ?

what will be the max horsepower on a steel liner fishing motor with all available mods..... ,miled/stuffed block, rod slots, max portet chest and ports with 150psi compression (we have 102 ethanol free octane on the pump here:smiletest: but for $4.60 a gallon )
and so on ........did somebody got out 260-280/290 on a dyno ?

not the wishlist horsepower or brain horsepower the real dyno ones :smiletest:

have taken a look at the vertexpistons.com on the pics they look good and
they do have a very good reputation in dirt bike pistons ,they are also OE supplier of two-stroke pistons for KTM ,the pistons do have a 12-21% silicon conten.that's the same content what my cast Speed-Pro Hypereutectic Pistons in my 600 hp supercharged mustang do have and i am fine on the drag strip and on the streets with them, now for 5 years and counting.

The Prostock motors Mach is referring to are stock 200's.

The 200 is essentially the same casting as the 260. You can make good power out of them if you know what you're doing

Want to bring this thread back to top to see if anyone has any REAL numbers they can share on hp expectations
from the above mentioned work. I have a pair of 98 200 efi fishing motors that will be going to ruck here soon to be ported and have chest cut... Simon remapped ecu's... Marles top-pinned pistons... 2 L heads... CCMS reeds and spacer kit... If i get a 280 port and 280/260 chest cut... what could i realistically expect hp numbers to be?? same as a 260/280 racing motor??
