I just picked up this 1980 13' TwisterCraft. It has a 140 or 150HP Inline 6 with Land & Sea Nitrous kit. I was told the motor was a 150XS. Still trying to find out if it is a 140Hp or 150HP. Best I can tell It has a T-2 Mid and a 1:1 Speedmaster on it. The boat looks NEW. Not one scuff or scratch in the hull. It was used for drag racing and been stored inside. The deck is paper thin. I was told it is a hare over 200 lbs de rigged. It Came with a 16" and 18" cleaver for it. Here are some photos. I talked with xskid on the board that has the brother to this one and has been helpful. Anyone with any dragracing history or more info on this let me know.
Thanks
Steve

A 13' V with a 6 cyl Mercury is a good way to get wet hard.
Nitros on an inline 6 Merc is a good way to blow powerheads
If it is a 1500XS powerhead it will have a J stamped in the block near the serial # on the R side
It has other T2 components besides the mid and speedmaster. Could it be a T2 block with a front half change? All 1400 and 1500 blocks were painted black from the factory. Any early block that would have been silver would have had the wrong bolt pattern to fit the mid. It is painted silver for the wrong year or it is a T2 block. If some one modified a T2 crank for a 3 carb front the firing order is different. Compare it to the firing order printed on the water jacket cover around the sparkplugs. You can do it by tracing the plug wire position if it runs properly as they are arranged or by sticking a screwdriver in the plug holes as you rotate the engine by hand and see the order that they come to the top. It could still be a T2 block with std crank. T2 block would not have slot in cyl walls for power port in pistons but neither would an early 1400 or 1150.
Whatever it is it is very cool.
A deflector in front of the carbs will make it more predicatable and easier to jet right. These engines do not like ram air.

The early bolt pattern motors(125/135) will fit some C6 (T2) mids. I don't think that is what you have though. I think Mariah is on the right track. I have some early T2's and C6 and they have the cast finned exhaust cover like you have(they look like 135/150 covers). The later ones have a solid aluminum plate for a cover. I would guess it is a 140/150 that someone removed the paint. I was hoping you would post something about this boat. I saw it listed on your list of boats. It is a beautiful boat!! Have you ran it yet?

I have not run it yet. We have 3 feet of ice on the lakes and I just got it. I am not having any luck finding the serial number on the block. Any ideas??

Some of the early 1400 came painted silver ( up to serial #3295133 ? ), I got one 1400 with silver block..
Could it be a replacement block ??
. I would guess it is a 140/150 that someone removed the paint.
Sounds reasonable , look at the flywheel ...got multiple T2/T2x flywheels and none of the got any paint ...
Anyway.. It looks like something I could have put together :), it's a good mix of part from different engines....
Early Speedmaster ( Patent Pending ), years before the C6/T2 engines ? .
T2 mid .
T2/T2x flywheel .
T2/T2x electronics or maybe just inspired by ??
1400/1500 block ?, painted silver ..
Carbs and dist looks 1400/1500 ..
The block should have some casting numbers , those might help.
Got any numbers from those carbs ?, WMK-??

I have read on here before that some of the early 140's were silver, I bought a used 140 off a tunnel boat in 74/75 but it was black. Mercury did a lot of weird stuff.

OK here is what I have for numbers. The block is bare no paint. top left orange paint top right green paint. Casting looks like 852-7328 or 7326. Has a H in a circle and 380 in a circle.
Head 1023 5068 380 C in a circle Also has a 102 stamp on front of block and front half as matching them as a pair.
Front half 948-6262
Carbs WMK-14-1-2
WMK-14-2-2
WMK-14-3-2
Head looks like it may be black under the silver.
I can not find a serial number anywhere
Any help is great.
Thanks

That boat is a copy of a Checkmate MX13. I ran Action Marine versions of that boat in E & G Production classes back in the 70s. Watch yourself in that thing. Sudden loss of thrust either from prop blowout or just lifting off throttle too quick can cause the boat to try to swap ends. The problem was worse with the small 65 hp gearcase than with the larger 85 hp unit. Good luck with it and post pics when you run it.

72 140's were silver. nitrous on an inline..ooo. I would for sure have a talk with Chuck Goodman about his systems and put another tank in the boat for a methanol chaser.

don't see that nitrous being engaged anytime soon...if it's right, it'll be plenty fast without it.

I don't think I am going to use the NOS. It does have 2 solinoids one for the nitrous and another for extra fuel/oil mix.
It should go good without it. I was told they used the NOS for the the hole shot.

I have never seen a 1972 140 with a silver powerhead. It must have been early in the year. I bought mine new and it was in the late winter of 1972 and it had a black powerhead. I do not have anything left of it that would show the number but do have a picture of it somewhere on my boat then with the cowl off because I thought it was cool to run it that way.
The pictures of your block at the top and rear show it to be a later block because of the casting for steam bleed off. These were not present on the Mercury blocks through the mid 1970s and I think it dates it to be much newer but I do not know this for sure. I think also that it was much later when the rear water jacket cover used bolts into threaded holes rather than nuts. Is the front block half retained by bolts that thread into the block or with nuts on the block side?
I do not see any reason why any stock inline 6 cowling would not fit this engine with all the parts. The electronics would move back to the front in the stock location. A Twister2 or Twister2X cowling would also be a good choice also but much harder to find. It would seem that one of the cowl poppers here would make a Twister2 type cowl. They would probably sell.

the block is 1979 or slightly newer. the serial # will be located just under casting #. it would be on a raised flat area about 1/2 in. x 1 1/2 in. long. it would be a 7 digit # stamped in . if no serial # then it is a replacement block. its not an xs because of no J stamped near casting #. the last casting # for J blocks was 852-6622 which is a 1978 model. which i have 3 n.o.s. still in the boxes. all 3 are 1978s. any way its still cool and fast. i own the twin to this one. 2 orange and 1 yellow were made. yes i had it at mt. dora a few times. it has 1500xs with 1:1 speedmaster. it runs low 90s at 7200 rpms. it started getting loose so i cupped the prop a wee bit and problem solved. you still need to know the boat. and be very carefull. it would be so cool for us to display our t-crafts side by side at a show.

the original motor that was on my t-craft was a t-2. its why he called them t-crafts. the motor looks alot different now because of mid and cowls, but its the same block and lower .i have the motor on my 14ft. ally. i will post pics of t-craft from the 1980s when i figure out how to scan them and then post them. after he made a few single seat versions, he had the help of the s.t.v. factory make about 10 or 12 four seaters and some bass boats. i have pics of them. that is the history of the 13ft. twistercrafts. i bought the t-2 that was originally on t-craft a few years after i bought the boat. it was blown up and in pieces. i put it together and made mid and cowls , and now its called hot-rod twister.

I just took a good look at the pictures at the start of this thread and noticed the "Keller" speedometer. I think those speedos have become colectable these days. When I was racing the Keller was the standard we all used to set up our race boats. GPS has made pitot pressure speedos obselete.

I still own on of the 13' Twister bass boats. Helped dad rig it in the late 80's when we picked it up at STV from Roark. Will post some pics of it shortly. We also had one of the yellow 4 seater with the same deck as this twister drag that we sold to steve. really wish i still had the 4 seater, was heavier lay up than the paper thin center steer. Was just an all around fun little boat. i still love taking out the bass boat, with a little 70 Rude on it, fun like a go-cart on the water. Xskid, when you bought your orange t-craft, did it come out of southern Indiana?

xskid, I noticed it looks like your boat is padded where as moomba's looks like it is not. Looks like the bass boat is not padded also.
I have a MX-13 upside down right now and am debating adding a pad. How wide and how long is your pad if I May ask?
Also how much setback are you guys running?
Thanks

These do have a small pad. I wouldnt touch a thing if your hull is the same as mine. Yours may be way heavier. This hull has to be under 200 Lbs. Deck is paper thin. This boat was used dragracing all its life. I ran the other day and 75MPH is a walk in the park. I had an ignition problem with it cutting out so I didnt run over 75. With the speedmaster the prop doesnt free wheel when it shuts down.I ran a 16" cleaver. Had a ton of throttle left. I know these Twister Crafts have run in the 90's. These are very Light though. My set back is 3 or 4 inches. I hope to run it next tue. Still waiting for my cowl from Ronnie. I think something is getting wet without the Cowl. I did replace some wires with bad insulation.

I think you will find that your boat is much heavier than the 3 of these Ctr Steer Twister Crafts that were made. I was told that Roark Summerford had something to do with building these boats. Also not sure if there were any changes made in the mold from what the Check Mate was. No flotation no coast guard lables. xskid also has some info on these. I think his has run in the 90's and was told this one ran mid 90's. I will keep you posted as to how it runs. I just need to make sure my Ign cutting out is taken care of before going all out. Im sot sure if the Speedmaster LU has alot to do with how it runs. A lot less drag for sure.
Thanks for the interest in these boats.

It's probably not as light as yours, but all the flotation is removed and I replaced all the wood except for that in the deck.
I wouldn't say my deck is paper thin but walking on the bow is out of the question, the stern seems pretty solid but has a piece of plywood glassed under each side of the splash well.
I also only weigh 130 :)

Nothing serious, I've actually not had the boat wet yet. It was pretty rough when I got it.
I have a 60 to start out with and I'll see what happens with my 140 from my ski boat at the end of the season, but I'm afraid it's going to be too heavy.
Unless it's super fast, fun, and somewhat easily controllable with the 140 the 60 will probably go back on and I'm going to haul it to savannah, ga and leave it there for when I visit 2-3 times per year.
Boat is upside down right now and nearly ready for primer, that's why I'm asking pad questions. It's pretty tempting but I think I'm probably going to leave it alone.

Here is how mine sits in the water with 5 gal of fuel. Im not sure what my motor weighs. It is a 150HP inline 6 (waiting for one piece fiberglass cowl) with a T2 mid and Speedmaster. As I said I have only run up to 75 but the handeling is nice. Also keep in mind I dont have power trim. It will hop under 20 where my motor is set at now but above that no hop. A little bow high on take off.

My 15' G.W.Invader sat with a very similar attitude inthe water.......can't wait ti see the Cowl Ronnie is doing for you.
If that boat actually weighs 200 lbs I would be very careful with that power at speed..... Ultralight hulls can...and do...delaminate in milliseconds..... and water is like concrete at the speeds you are attempting......
I hope your project works out, but please use extreme caution as you are definitely into a ballistic speed range.

Im happy to run it in the 70's with it. I have a STV Pro Comp to play with for running 90 plus. The Twister Craft is more of a play around Look Cool toy. The boat has never been left in the water or left out at night. It has been garaged since the day it was built. The hull looks like new in and out, not a scratch, no beach rash or a stress cracks.

these boats are very stable contrary to common sense. mine with 1500xs runs in the low to mid 90s . the guy that built these had a t-2 on it and it ran well over 100. just dont walk to the back of the boat when sitting still because it can take on water and may even sink. ron allstot and a friend made the 3 center steering versions. summerford made around 12 more in his factory but were the bass boat versions. thats the history of these boats. they were made between 1980 and 1987. i have pics of these from back then, i will scan and post.

He (Thom) had might have called ya back, (called him, said will call back), but you guys East coast, are 11pm now, we here, west coast, 8pm,. sundown is way more than an hour yet. I'll try the PM again.....(DAMN, 13 foot, 200 pound hull, XS1500 on the bottle out the hole, then the MASSIVE PROP TAKES OVER? Then....."hang the f&%k ON, "into the unknown, where few dare to exploit, .."the outer Limits"!"

Steve, glad ya hooked up with Thom (the PM), and turned out to be a simple kill switch wire, wrong spot. I remember a long time ago, my old Switzer, XS, some dumbass hooked up the battery wrong..(hey, it was dark out!), and saw that spark. Then zero fire the motor? I HATE when I let that.."smoke out the wires! New was $130 back then, now, getting expensive, but ya gotta have one!. Pix some Thom's junk. Glad ya two got hooked up..Thom is YEARS of knowledge! First, like said, same boat as mine, in the PM..Last is Twister, probably end up on his G-3, replace the XS...

Heres the prop running now, 12x24cup, as broke in motor now, (135+ HP, total package, about 1000 lbs, me in it) going to Thoms soon, for a "Lets crank the timing, good gas, get the witch into the high 6000+ R's..."get some hull air!"..(nuff now, scary little Flatty, 8 inch pad, one inch dropped chines now, "air rider!" lotta fun, twin fins, turns on that damn "dime!) I tried one his 24 Choppers, and the death grip on the wheel, was too much for me, and the boat, as when off the throttle, ass end was all over the place, sideways. To much blade in the water. We still need to maybe do a jack plate, do a LWPU, surface the blades..?..lots potential!

Haven't run it much. Both times out no one with the camera. I have the ign cutting out above 4,000 rpm's. Need to order a CDI ignition for it and that should cure the problem. She stops pretty quick when it cuts out with that speedmaster on it. I have to work the day of the river run so wont make it. Just need about 2 more months of nice weather to have a little fun.

It needs a new switch box. I orderd one on line and turned out to be a miss print. I new the price was to good but they paid to ship it back. I will pick one up over the winter. I have Had some thoughts of listing the boat for sale as I only used it twice last summer.
Thanks

This is an old thread, but I just scored a 13' Twistercraft Bass Boat! xskid mentioned above that only 10-12 of these were built. I'm having the carbs gone thru, also going to rebuild the rear deck lids. Hope to have it out this weekend for only the 3rd time.

the first 3 were center steering single seat closed deck race boats. 2 orange-white, (mine and moombas) and 1 yellow-white.(whereabouts unknown) made in a garage in Indiana in 1981 by 2 guys. then in the mid 1980s they made around 8 to 10 more and these were the bass boat type and runabout type, and were made at the stv plant by the summerford guys. then no more were made...they called them twistercrafts because the first one had a t-2x on it (mine) and I have that engine. I have a pic of mine from early 1980s with t-2 on it, when I bought mine it had a mint 1500xs on it, the guy I got it from had the twister engine and I went back a few years later and bought it. I never ran mine with the twister on it, it runs 92 on gps with 1500xs and speedmaster, ...that's good enough.....
I bought this boat from Steve (Moomba) and it is available, boat and/or motor, to anyone interested.

Too bad it would be unsafe to put one of those 150's on the bass boat!
Refer to post 1 for pics. The only thing changed has been the switch box. Only in water once since I owned it and then only about 15 minutes. Widow Maker name has been removed.
