Most times guests will throw in for gas, especially when there is skiing and tubing involved. Now for those who don,t ,you make sure they are in the boat when you fill up and hopefully they pick up on it, if not, they don,t go for a ride again !!!!

Only chicks ride for free in my boat and must wear very small bikinis......Guys are def. a different story, Don't have to pay it all, but if you don't offer to kick in, you may not ride again.... I always thought this was the universal rule of boating?

It depends on what " boat " your referring to.. Sportfishing boat runs on diesel and a lot of it so " thanks " doesn't make it past the end of the dock. My little boat only holds 3 people and Im always happy to take friends and family for a ride. It get's great gas milage though so it could be why I don't mind. It's purpose built- high speed @ low RPS,s = great MPG

I don't mind springing for fuel, but I do enjoy them at least offering...

Does your boat run on "Thanks"?

I find that mine DOES, in fact, continue to run on "Thanks".....Once the day is done, all is wiped down and clean, and its nestled comfortably back in the garage, with a gentle pat, I "Thank" it for not trying to kill me today. :D

Yeah, most people dont understand the cost of a day on the water. I take people out fishing in my fishing boat. "an old beater" and its still easy to go through 30-60 bucks in gas a day by the time I trailer it to and from the lake. Now this is a drop in the bucket for some of you guys I know. I dont make a lot of money, so 40 bucks goes a long way.

Id rather get a thanks then 3 crumpled up dollar bills and lint from the bottom of their pocket :) Ive been paid like that, no joke :)

I always offer to pay when I'm in another person's boat, but most of the time they know Ill drive my boat next time out.

A friend of mine has a sticker on his dash that reads: Cash, Gas or Ass nobody rides for free!

With the fuel prices staedily rising i for one will do more sand bar lounging and less riding.

Ya they all think they want to go real fast but most want you slow down after 80mph, only been a few see 96-100mph. But they never think about the 30gal/hr fuel consumption when running wide open or the added cost of oil, race fuel to boost octaine. Only ever had 2 people offer money for fuel, funny thing they were boat owners also. With 2 small 10gal tanks they always comment on how much fuel it uses but never seem to pull out their wallets.

as long as i enjoy the company i dont care if they chip in or not im going to go either way
sometimes its nice to have some one to talk to and help at the ramp and with the cooler etc
just dont drink all the beer

I've never asked anyone for gas money. Im going boating either way. If I offer them to join, that's my invite to them. I repeat, that is an INVITE for a ride, not a ride + gas money. If I don't have the money for gas, im not going for a ride. I think its rude. Just my personal opinion IMO

02-07-2011, 11:27 PM
I don't often agree with what AFR says on here, but he, I and Mastercraft think exactly the same way. I never expect anything beyod thanks and, if they come to my house with the trailer, help with the washdown. Now, when I was the toy puller at Lake Jackson for 5 or 6 families over Memorial Day many years in a row, on their own some of the others would haul the tanks and jugs to the station and fill them up. But typically, with this boat, I am going out either way and glad to have the company.

When e go offshore fishing its usually a group effort. Costs for a day offshore are usually around $300. I dont worry about it in the little boat because nobody will ride in it :)

I get just as pissed off by the guys that jump in their car and go home at the end of the day and dont hang back and help wash the boat...but they make sure they get thier share of the fish. :nonod:

I think of it this this way....Im going anyway so if ya come along thats great,I have someone else to scare the crap out of!!! They usaully do offer beer and money for gas and Im no dummy I take it!! But like others said it is nice to have a hand at the ramp and I'd rather have someone else enjoy the ride with me.

Few of my buddies never really had much money when growing up.Anytime we went out, however they would show up and help with everything that day even washing it up afterwords.Nowdays if going out the wife or I will fill it up.Whoever is joining us tends to bring the beer or pick up lunch if we go out to a restraunt. We do enjoy company with us and have never asked anything of anyone, thats just the way its seems to work out.

There is one seat in my boats for a reason.

My last few boats have all been center steer single seat boats other than the pontoon. Yesterday I bought my first ever 4 seat STV. Most of the people that have seen me drive won't ride with me anyway.

Most of my friends offer to chip in on gas especially if they see the price at the pump for a fill-up. I usually just make em buy the beer and snacks or what not. If you invite somebody to go boating with you, expecting them to chip in is kinda rude. However, if you get invited on somebody's boat and don't offer to help with gas, drinks, whatever...well that'll probably be your last boat ride.

Im okay with it as long as they offer to help "grease the wheel" so to speak. Maybe chipping in for gas, or riding in their boat the next weekend, or them brining the drinks and some foods. It all works out in my group of friends. If not, then they arent that great of a friend in my book!

I don't ask the pretty women for gas money...but I tell them to bring what they want to drink.....(they ask if ME if they can ride)

I don't ask my male friends for gas either, but I don't make a habbit of taking males on my boat more than one time........(just to show them what its like on the river)......with only an old 2.4 for power any "un-pretty" weight can REALLY be felt at the Hot Foot....

There is one seat in my boats for a reason.

I'm getting more @$%& close to that myself. The biggest "thank you" that I ever got was this past summer, when a "friend" of mine snuck weed on board my boat and was smoking it when he thought I wasn't looking (or smelling). Bad enough to take advantage of someone, but even worse to put me at risk of having MY boat impounded after I was nice enough to take him out in the boat for an afternoon.

If I invite someone to go boat riding, I expect to buy the gas. After all, I decide how far to ride and how to adjust the throttle.

to me it means more to have someone to help me clean the boat afterwards since i was probably planning to go out anyways. if somebody makes a special request for me to take them out then i let them pay for gas. otherwise, 99% of the time i just ask for a hand cleaning up and around the docks when im pulling in.

I would never even think about riding in a gas consuming anything without asking to pay my way .Some don't care a bit....
Some people borrow gas ,oil ,beer etc and never even blink an eye or offer to replace ....blows me away sometimes !!

if i'm in my little boat, i'm going anyway so come on. but if someone wants to run ,you going to sit on the bank. now if we going offshore fishing it cost us around 600$ so chip in for ice, beer, food, something to pay your way.

I had a custom decal made for my boat.

I always get stewed up when my sister/brother in law come up with their kids and I provide a place to stay, take them fishing, water skiing/tubing, burn gas that costs over $4 on the water... and all they bring up is a pack of hot-dogs....

If you invited me out my first question would be what kinda beer do you drink and bring you at least 12 of them...

in my case, my boat runs with a lot of things, I can't pull my boat with my car into the ramp, my friend has a truck ... helps a lot, I go boating with good friends usually, it is supposed to be simple, food, or help. I like thanks you but the better way to let know people how much it cost, cause there is a lot of people thinks that boating works with god water ... I fill my boat at the gas station with the people I am bringing, they see how it cost, and after that, the know it consume gas when it's time to refill it ... no need to say anything into thoses case, they offers money. And for people who has no money, they won't ask me to come in my boat, except if I invite them, I know what I am doing when they come, and when people appreciate the ride and are sincerely happy, does'nt need money, it's enough ...

There was at time, albiet long ago, that the cost of fuel was a non-issue. Those were great times. To entertain & be with friends & family, you simply invited them out for a fun day on the boat. And other times, they would do the same. Know one even bothered to "keep track" of how many times each other reciprocated. Because this is the era I come from, I will never expect others to pay for any of my boat related fuel costs. Boats are more expensive to own these days. I simply make sure I can fully afford my next boat purchase, before I have my fun. But thats just me.

When my guy buddies come, they usually buy beer for the after boating activities, or they drive and use their tow vehicle. For ladies...well there's a decal on the back of the front seat that reads "Cash, Gas, or Ass, no one rides free"

My Girlfriend was at the beach this weekend with her friends, and one of the kept hinting "i wish we could go boating" and looks at my GF. she said it a few times, and she replied "when your cheap ass pays for some fuel, then you can request to go out. it takes 300+ to fill it up., that boat dont run on thanks." I learned her well. lol
She doesnt believe it costs that. So when i go out again im gonna take her to the pump with me. She also is a cheapskate.

02-24-2011, 11:52 PM
When I pay 300 plus to fill it up, the 20 dollars they often offer me just makes me laugh. My boat is going out with or with out them, if they want to throw in on something, help clean it, or pick up a bar tab.

I like this one. I ride with my older kids a lot. I seem to always take care of the empties in the cooler and the gas. I shouldn't even admit that.
