Dragon, I saw a boat that I think was similar to that last year at Jasper. I'd never seen one with the flared sides before that one and now yours. The guy had a T2 on it and it had been used as a pleasure boat, but he thought it was pretty fast in it's day.

any info on the year of this boat would be a great help. I would like to match a merc of a simular year to it.

If only we had one to slap on the transom...

My buddy's looking for around an 80hp Merc for the back, should be enough power to get her up on the pad. I'm curious what kind of speeds the hull is capable of myself.
A guy in our area has one with a 65hp merc on the back. Saw him flyin' around a nearby lake wasn't breakin' any Ken Warby records but looked good and he was havin' fun.
and you can't beat fun for a good time!
Anyone else???

What year is that boat? Is there a number on the right rear of the transom?

dragonwolfe
11-08-2002, 09:47 PM
No capacity plate, no hull id number. My buddy was going to crawl inside and see if there was any other id inside. I know some old hulls had a serial number inside the boat on the transom or sometimes under the dash.
He hasn't transferred ownership yet, customs may be able to tell him what year and model from their records, maybe...

Testing out both my camera abilities and Northern Jewel's new find on Lake Bernard in Sundridge Ontario. Lake Bernard is the largest fresh water lake in the world without an island. Beautiful weather for November 9.
The camera is your average 2 megapixels Fuji, with the ability to shoot 20 seconds of video, not bad.

Had one, but it was much older. Ran it with a 35 Chrysler. Fun boat.

Hey Sean,
How's it goin? I was curious if any "Canadian Brothers" would be familiar with this hull.
Do you have any pics?
I was telling Northern Jewel about your J-Craft this summer, after seeing one on a local lake.
Thanks

I've got an old pic of it. Have to hook up the scanner and figure out how all this stuff works. I don't now how many Jewels were built but it seen like quite a few.

Quite a site with "Black Tower" on the back.

Occasionally we see them for sale in the trasher mag.

How bout them Chrysler Boats...

I would like to see more info on them if you could LakeRACER!!

Pretty unique for the day too

Appreciate the response. It is a wicked looking little boat.
I'd like to see what it could do with an inline on the back :)
I agree with Anthony, LakeRacer if you've got any more info or pics, keep it comin'

Well, Last spring I aquired one of these Shallow Vee Conquerors. During research, I ran across a pretty cool Chrysler site.

Sorry, I don't have any more information on these boats. I ended up stripping the one I had (Which had a rotten transom) and selling off the boat, motor and trailer. Mine looked like this, but not as nice.
Maybe mine looked like this one when new.

I would say if you look in the Ontario boat trader when the season is right you would find about 20 or so throghout the season.
New Ark Marine on lake muskoka - highway 169 - has a chrysler like that for sale with a newer 100 merc ( 1999 or so i would say) i think they wanted 4 0r 5 grand for it. never been a big fan of either, but theze around for sure. All jewels i have seen advertised have been in the late to mid 70's and early 80's...

Does that Chrysler that you saw for sale look like the one Lakeracer posted? (blue-flake/white butt- stripe, Charger gas cap...). Good shape? Any other info or a phone # would be appretiated. Thanx! :) J

If anybody is interested in a restoration, I bet the one I sold could be had pretty cheap. It still has the Charger gas cap and all the Chrysler gauges and steering. The original seats are there but the bases and frames are rotten.

Only Chrysler would have put their own special brand of musclecar marketing sizzle on the water in the 70,s!!!  Gotta' love that "bumblebee" stripe!...:D

The Humber Jewel was a very popular ski boat, manufactured in the late 60's and early 70's. It was best powered by the 3-cylinder OMC and Mercury engines. The Jewel made one of the nicest waterski boats around, with almost no wake and excellent top speed and exciting handling.

thanks for the reply. I met a guy who sold them new in the late 60's, he figured mine to be a 70-71. I have seen two other jewels around my area. One was bought new in 66 the other was a 68, The changes in the boats where very different through those years.

The boat at the campground in Jasper was identical to the one in Lakeracer's picture above, same color and all. The owner said it was the fastest thing around in it's day with the T2 on it.

You have a Sun Ray splash of the original Humber Jewel. After Humber stopped making hulls (they made some of the best and lightest sport FE and FJ vee competition hulls of their day), Sun Ray used the molds to reproduce the Jewel. Actually, Sun Ray made a more nicely appointed hull, re-tooled the Humber "square" nose to a pointed bow design (which was about 9 inches longer). The SunRay boat was also somewhat heavier. A lovely boat, and I bet that it makes a great ski boat with your power on it.

you are a wealth of knowledge. Any idea of what year this might of happened? The hull is not stamped on the transom. Do you know if they had a name for thier SPLASH? Thanks again.:)

I'd be just guessing, without looking up some history notes....but I think that Humber stopped making Jewels about '68 or '69 or so.

Bought it in Ontario for $1200.... I have recently put a 55hp Evinrude 1977 engine... New steering wheel, mech. steering cable, etc.... If anyone owns a Humber Jewel.. Please add some pictures... I want to see what some others have done with theirs, maybe get some ideas for myself.... Any info on the Humber Jewel would be much appreciated as well....

Cheers!

I think Jewels were built into the 70's. The factory was in Weston, just south of Wilson, in the shadow of the 401. I think I remember driving by the factory and I didn't start to drive until 1974.

There used to be several Humber Jewels running around Rice Lake,Ontario in the 70's. Around the Hastings and Roseneath area. Ask Anthony, there used to be one just up the shoreline from their cottage for years.

Old thread my friend...started in 2002 and last post was Sept 2005. You'd have better luck checking this posters profiles to see if they are even still actively involved with the website and then PM them.

Here's my 2 cents on the Humber Jewel;

Post # 29 by Humberjewel, if you look at the 50E 13910 that is a Toronto registration number and my guess it would date back to about 1962 to 1964. As well that looks like about a 1964 Evinrude Lark on the transom. My own boat is a 1968 and it's 50E 66003.

The original posts by Northern Jewel, I think that is a Surf Master copy of a Jewel. The yellow with black decal stripe say Surf Master to me.

If I remember the Humber Boat Company was around during the 60's and maybe a little into the 70's. Then Surf Master came along mid to late 70's and Sun Ray late 70's to late 80's. Most of the original Jewels were powered with anything from a 35hp Merc to an 80hp Merc OR 40hp Johnrude to the 55hp 3-cylinder Johnrudes that came out in 1968. The original Jewels were 12 feet 1 inch i think and were quite flat bottomed meaning no matter what power you put on them they really didn't want to go much over 55mph or so.

The original Humber Jewels with the 55hp 3-cyl OMC engines were a great rig for their time - and a great ski boat.

I just got rid of one because they require huge power to produce any speed! there a flat bottom!cool for a classic runabout, but boring as a rowboat!

Jeff, judging by the 50E number yours should be about a 1967 or 1968.

Jeff on another note our paths have probably crossed a few times. I ran Sportscraft FE and SE in the 70's and Rob Scythes and Mark Rotharmel are both very good friends of mine and I think you know them as well.

Yup.......Know them both. Thanks for the date info on the Jewel--There are a few opinions out there that say it dosn't matter what you do with them, you just cannot get any performance. In 2013, I hope to prove them wrong!
