would it be best to do away with factory fuel pump and run a electric one?

I believe those motors had connectors between the carbs that are held in place by a 5/16 head 10-32 bolt. It sounds like the center and bottom carb have loosened and are out of adjustment. They are all driven from the top carb, so hold the throttle open and adjust the two carb throttle connectors, center first , then the bottom.
As far as the fuel pump goes, they should be fine for that motor. The ethenol in the fuel isn't kind to the older motors and I suspect you need to clean out the system.
Hope this helps. - Roger
