has anyone gone about porting and polishing a 44ci merc? any noticable performance gain? was thinking about cleaning up any carbon build up on the exhaust port to let the motor breathe a little better and thought i would ask...any input would be greatly appreciated:cheers:
Thanks, Jake

those motors are what they are, and by cutting on it you'll do very little but mess up a fine running engine.

You might check out ******************** seems like those guys over there mess with those motors alot. It seems like any time anyone ask how to mod a little motor on this site they always get the same answer, "Don't bother". They might be small but don't mean they can't go fast.:D

Maybe on a small hydro or utility, but in his case props and set up will do more than any cutting on that motor.

40hp,haven't really seen your boat setup, but have started reading your what to do with my life thread and gotta love it. glad to see a young guy having interest in boats then sitting in the house playing black opps.
but hey lynn looking at that boat i wonder what an old stinger omc would do on that.loved watching cypress gardens run the crap outta the ramp jumping boats with those motors.
but like the captian said you can get alot of change in ride, handling and speed with setup alone.and if there is a prop shop around and you can get to talk to a guy there, and always rember respect, and talk with him,or her nowadays and i'm sure they would be more than happy to let you try a few props.
if you get a chance look at my old pics of my boat, had the exact same boat when i was 16 with a 140 and before setback was thought of,saw 60 all day,now i hope close to 80 but the gas miliage sure sucks now.but will follow your progress.stay in school and study!

A Stinger would rock, but 70 yammie is a way way better running engine, even a pro v 50 yamaha would kick some ass on that boat.

Drama, west coast style.

Was tring to tell him about a forum where some people work on those motors but it blocked it out. West Coast drama, more like heart land small boat enthuseist. Wasn't tryin to stur up anything just sayin that's the responce most people get when they ask about a smaller motor on here. When you live somewhere like I do and the closest place to rode has 40hp limit you don't have the option of getting a bigger motor.

The water patrol might be goofy some times but there not stupid. They pull you over check your paperswork, motor, carbs all that good stuff. Out running them don't work out so hot either. A guy tried that a few years back, he out ran the 35hp just fine:p, he couldn't out run the shoal runner they brought back after that:eek:. Pretty funny stuff.
If you can get a hold of Kevin McAfee with NBRA, he is on HydroRacer also, his Mod 3cyl pushes over 80MPH, I will post Rockaway Beach and tell you which one is Kevin, scalded Dog.
Kevin is Y-44 brown runabout

i think there is a post all about this motor on BRF
I think you will do good with that prop, and work on set up, up and out till it can't stand it.
Some of my hydro buddy's are wanting to run tucked, but it lifts it butt and pushed down the front.
If you can get a height checker, it checks from the centerline of the prop shaft, and protrudes to the front of the underside of the boat and you measure the difference, usually refered to as AKA Pecker Checker, who did you get the four blade splined from neat trick?

Thats the magical work of art by ron hill :) he welded in the splines ... And ya i was thinkin of buyin a jack plate but once i get the right height it seems like a waste of 200$ soo kinda had a second thought about that ... Need to find someone with one i can borrow for testing and figureing out right height...
Start 1-1.5below cav plate raising 1/4" up then by the 1/8, you probably don't have a lower water pick up, so don't starve it for water, try to get it raised up so the cav is at the pad or a little higher.
the start jacking it out. You may may need the cav al little lower than the pad, depends how the hull handles, I'm sure some of these guys can chime in.
I would start at number 2 pin out. The prop will tell you, we have good set up for one prop, change and it doesn't play, rake angle, pitch, Ron Hills magic?

I have a friend that has a 3 cylinder Yamaha on a 15 in. 40 mid. Low water pickup and all. Wiseco forged pistons. I think he just freshened it up but hasn't really run it much. If ur interested, I will see if he still wants to sell it. Last comp numbers I saw on it was around 250lbs...

comp numbers 250!!!! he running nitro on that? but hp40 i had a 4 blade 24 thru hub that would launch my boat clean out of the water with the motor jacked down, but if i tried to surface it it becam uncontrolable,my best prop was a 26 chopper running about 1in below the bottom, didn't want to raise it too much because i didn't have the water pressure and temp hooked up yet. but see iff you can get a nose cone,or maybe some guys might have a few aideas of an external water pickup.just rember its always better to ask a dumb question than make a stupid mistake.het and post some pics
