I need some help with a rebuild. I have a 225 merc. Not sure of the year, carb motor. Smoked one piston and is already .015 over. I am trying to make a pretty nasty motor but keep it halfway reliable. Should I punch it out more?? Put a sleeve in the bad hole? Balance and blueprint? What type pistons should I use? I am ordering the exhaust can from bob's and prolly getting the jsr heads. Not sure about the spacer. Please tell me exactly what I can do to this block. I heard of changing the exhaust ports and polishing. Is this something I can do myself or pay someone? I have a good mechanic but he is out of date when it comes to high performance motors. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

If your motor is a 2.5 making big hp is a very realistic option. You need to figure out what your goals are, how many RPMs are you planning as your target numbers, how heavy is your rig, and are you are planning on building a pump gas motor or are you willing to run anelevated octane engine and buy race fuel...
Heavier hulls need to have an engine modified that will maintain low end torque unless you are willing to use smaller pitch props and non pump gas compression heads..
Also the standard of the High Performance industry for higher RPM and compression motors is forged pistons. I have had great luck with Wizards , they come in over sizes ( std, .024", and .044" ) with the correct chrome ring for steel sleeves also ALL forged pistons with the steel sleeved engines will need to be clearinced to take in to consideration of the expantion issues with steel sleeves and forged pistons. I also suggest an up grade in ALL bearings to High Performance grade. I also would make mods on the fishing motor grade rods to accept a stronger tentsil l strength rod bolt. ( either a Pro Marine OR the ARP or SPS rod bolts )
Flywheel weights would also be a concern, the stock cast iron 40 amps are very heavy and stress the upper bearing...
Just a few friendly suggestions that works for me and mine and are my opinion only !

If I had the money the block would be headed your way!!!!! I have heard great things about your rebuilds. First... The hull is a center steer laser ltv 18 ft. I just bought so I have no idea on the weight. If I had to guess I would say 800. (guess)... I want to run pump gas. Do you sell the wizard pistons and if so can you give me a ballpark price. I can get more detailed with the exact year when I order. I will be ordering the heads from you soon. I will check on the prices of a lightweight flywheel too. Thanks.

Many times you can come out cheaper just sending it to Jay instead of going the do-it-yourself-route. You always come out better.

I will call you Jay thanks. I agree Jr but I just don't have thousand's of dollars to do the build. Spent all my money of the boat LOL!

You'd be surprised how much it can cost to build one yourself.;) It can be in the 20,000 dollar range after about the third time.:D

Ask Jay about his new customer "Special" where he builds you one for free and gets re-reimbursed under the Stimulus Program [see, he is good friends with Obama and even bought an Obamamobile].:D You will have to put an Obama sticker on your cowling though...
All joking aside, getting him to do it is not near as expensive as you would think and is much less expensive in the long run.

I think that one is going on the shop wall in big letters.

I have a 225 merc....... carb motor.
Jay,
Probably a 3L. I know you don't do anything with them. Just thought I would point that out.

Thanks James,
I am building a few 3 liters now with help from Jordon Marine ... But as most know I'd rather do the 2.5's ....

I know I said I was working on one and you stated you wouldn't touch one last time I spoke to you. It is good to expand! I have been doing a lot of OMC's this year. Just finished one up Monday and will finish up another one today.
Do you need a service manual on them? I have a couple I can send ya!

Sure , on sending the 3 liter manuals (but not an OMC ;) )
The more info I have the better..
Thanks James,

I just sent you the links to 2 manuals in a PM. If you find a mistake in anything let me know so I can correct it. I can even correct the text. Just read the instructions I have included and you will love these manuals.:cheers:

I don't think it's a 3 liter. Pulled the heads and it's already .020 over so maybe it was worked to a 225. I will know more when we get it apart. I am still tryin to figure out if I wanna send it off or try it with my mechanic. I will weigh the price verses the risk of total meltdown lol.

It would be cheaper in the long run to buy a drop on 260 or 280 fresh done right with all the good parts, you would have a much better motor and more power in stock form..

Times are tight man. Just spent a little change on the boat and now trying to scrounge up the remaining for a motor. I just can't afford a 4 thousand dollar motor right now. I really really wish I could!!!:nonod:

Post some pics. We can look at it and tell If it is a 3L, 2.5L, 2.4L. I don't know of a factory 225 carb engine except for the early 2.4 and the 3L. Take pics of the cylinders and sides and front.

I will try to this weekend.... The motor is at my friends/ mechanics house. I am begining to think that it's a 2.5 200 or 150 by what you guys are sayin. I know for a fact that it has .020 pistons in it and the guy I bought it from say's it's a 225 but could have had work done to a 200 or something. I will let you guys know. Thank you for all the input also!!
