Our Merc-a-ha is getting mounted this morning for our harbor boat. There is a 2002 225 Yamaha nearby that I got pictures of to compare. The only difference is the upper cowl and the plastic midsection cover. The cowls are LITE!!! Our motor is a 2003 model.

I read a boating magazine article. That would be a Yamaha built 225 painted black. Boating did say that the merc cowl was a wee bit quiter than the Yamaha.
Alaska, after all of the problems you had with the optimax the mercaha will probably run hundreds of hours with nary a complaint.
Maybe someday merc will release some info on it's big four stokes. But if they go silent, I would expect to see more mercaha's. Which will be sad. If you wan't a big four stoke your choice will be limited to Yamaha, Honda or Suzuki.

I know my statement ain't gonna sit well with many hardcore 2-strokers, but those engines look might nice and very clean.
Yea, I knows they weight a ton and don't rev, but remember...the folks that are buying them don't care!
We all missing the boat if we think Merc and Yam are trying to rig some speed or bass boats with dem beauties.
Bottom line they probably work very well for the intended use.

Well .....not sure what to say !! I know that if Yamaha puts there mind to it they can build it !!!!!! There new snowmobile the RX1 is quite a piece of work ..........and FREAKINN fast ( out of the box )
120++ mph . 4 cyl ,4 stk , and now there are BIG turbo kits availible . .
Allthough it does make me sick that they would allow a Yamaha to be painted black and sold as a Merc-crapy !!
Jeff .;)

Those pigs are the biggest, overweight, ineffiecent costly outboards MADE!
They're slightly quieter than the 2 stroke models that beat them in EVERY other category hands down. Why would a harbor boat need that? I would think they would need power over all
Sounds like somebody is being used as a guinea pig from the local sales rep that couldn't make the Opticrap work but hell they don't work on any boat!

Unfortunately for us 2 stokers it really doesn’t matter what we think...as John Tiger Jr. said in the November Family and Boating “the number of performance outboards don’t add up to a knat on a dog’s butt.”
Translation…there ain’t many of us and that number ain’t growing.
The NMMA website has some interesting figures on outboard sales by category…here how it all translates:
Utility boats: 22%
Other fish boats: 18.5%
Pontoon boats: 17.7%
Bass Boats: 16%
Performance boats: 0.1%
Notice that the last two categories add up to a whopping 16.1% of total sales. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see where the big market is.
Pontoons and large runabouts are a very good platform for fours because of their better gas mileage, extended idling and much cleaner pollution figures…BTW it doesn’t matter if any of this is true…the public believes it and that’s all that matters.

The DFI two stroke is;
More powerful
Cleaner
Lighter
Equal MPG (actually better if you factor in they're generally more powerful)
Cheaper initially
Cheaper to repair
Simpler (mechanically)
Cheaper to manufacture
More potential not only for marine applications but land and air as well
That benefits all boats everywhere. I think the only place where the 4S exceeds the 2S is in noise, but that stands to reason, nothing is happening (that matters) on half the strokes :D

Just got back from putting 2 hours on the big pig.
When ideling out of the harbor the only thing you hear is the water gurgling around the transom. This thing is absolutely quiet!
It'll be hard to compare the speeds as this motor has a 2:1 lower and the Opticrap and 3.0L Carbed 225 had 1.78:1 lowers. I am running the same prop though. This motor has a pretty broad rpm range. (5000 - 6000) The guys at work will finish the last 8 hours this weekend and I'll do a WFO run on Tuesday. Let's see if we can blow this mutha up.
Stay tuned........................:D
