I have a 280 that started smoking (oil) very bad at idle, which it really never done before? Also now it appears its not running on all cylinders? I'm also running a 40:1 oil mixture. I pulled the plugs (Champions) and all 6 seem to be fouled, which I guess would make sense? It appears from what I've read the NGK plugs are now the recommended plug for the 280. Note: I also had it in storage for about 8 months.
Can anyone point me in the right directions on solving this problem?

Pull the injectors and send them off to a reputable shop to be cleaned and flowed

WELCOME TO SCREAM and FLY !!!!!!

Don't know where you sent your injectors first BUT I have had guys send injectors to people that "say" they can service injectors and when they got back same issue. I then send them to Brucato and WA LA problem was solved...Dormant fuel may also be stale..

Also I run the NGK BPZ-8N-N-10 ( Mercurys now suggested plug for 280's ) in ALL our 280 builds and the folks love em...

IMO: Champion plugs work great in Briggs motors but thats the ONLY thing I'd run em in...

if you have had that fuel in storage for eight months i would pull it out and put in some fresh gas.i normally dont go over two months without pulling fuel out and replinish with fresh gas.

I did send them to Brucato. I will install a set of the NGK and see what happens. Also I don't know if it has any thing to do with my problem, but I found the vac. line to my fuel reg. plugged!

Its not un normal to find that waxy looking crap in both air barbs in the plenum . The one on the air signal feed for the regulator as well as the one that feeds signal to the MAF sensor will fowl often and can cause issues ..

Keep those clear at all times..

I'd also start off with a fresh load of known good fuel ..

Good luck,
Jay

I cleaned all vac. ports and installed a new set of NGK's and she is screaming again! Also can someone confirm the recommended oil to fuel ratio for the 280.

Thanks to all for the right direction!

Hi!

I experienced also now and then a plugged fitting for the vacum / PCU, and then the engine smoked a lot - and did not idle well. The fittings clogged themselves especially in hot weather.
