View Full Version : All this nosecone talk has me thinking. Do I even need one with my transom pickup?

My nosecone is really doing nothing now. It MIGHT provide a little extra tail lift at slower speeds. I don't have to worry about blowout. At anything over 70mph my bullet is out of the water anyway.
Will the boat be faster at the same slow to high cruise RPM without the nosecone (60-70mph)?
This is a video we took. The engine is 1/4" higher now than it was in the video. I may end up even higher. I'm just really tempted to knock the thing off and see how it drives.
Skip to 2 minutes in for the good stuff. First part was all slow speed.

I should add that I have a torque tamer and a "wing" shaped skeg. Video taken looking back show the engine is running very straight.
Buzzin..thanks.

In the applications we tested the v-4 cases blowout didn't occur until 84-85 mph with the stock case. The performance was better at speeds lower than that without the cone.

Thanks for he imput Ray...as always.
By the time I get (if I get) to those speeds its nothin but skeg.
I guess the only way to know is to try. Probably need to pull it off to redo it correctly anyway so I dont have much to lose. I can always replace it with a nosecone only (no pickups) if needed.

Blowout speed
also got to do with the gear ratio hence how far sideways the blades are on the prop to how sideways the case is going through the water

I decided to go ahead and remove he nosecone and it was WAY too easy. I started grinding out the epoxy so I could see the welds. Started looking at the welds and thought I might be able to just break the nosecone right off. 1st hit with a rubber mallet to the side of the nose put a big crack in the seam. Two more hits and it fell off. I think I got real lucky this thing didn't come off and kill me or someone else.
I know nothing about welding but what was left on the case I would describe as "slag". I popped it right off with a screwdriver (thats what I am holding in my hand). There was zero penetration into the case or nosecone. I think the only thing holding it was the epoxy which is why I was having so much trouble.

Hmm... if I remember back to welding classes in school.. I think they called that type of weld....Eagle Sh*t! :D

I should have taken video of me knocking it off. The epoxy was the only thing holding it. Good way to hurt someone.
Going to have to take it slow and work up to top speed and see how it changes the handling. Should be less transom lift at slow/mod speeds which I hope will help reduce the hop (I have to overtrim to drive through it) and maybe more stern lift at high speeds since it will be lifting from further back. I will get a video when I run it.
Gearcase looks tiny now.

Great video! On anything bow heavy or requiring much "up trim" to carry the bow you'll lose w/a cone. I added them to two different 80+ MPH V bottoms (the cone mfgs say 80 is the magic # right??) and lost efficiency with both and 3 MPH's on one. Went from running absolute neutral trim at speed on both to needing full up trim to carry the bow on both. At mid range speed that wouldn't even do it. Absolutely ruined two great handling boats.
Remember the guy w/the blown Honda is running over a 100 w/a surfaced stock case.
Since you are surfacing the case you should'nt experience any blow out as the bullet is in the air.
How'd my wheel run or is it back from Rich's yet?? I've got some wheels you mike like and am a mile from the ramp if you're ever up this way your welcome to try them.

Runs good Gary. Its a good mid 70's prop that pops right up on plane and handles well. Its actually the fastest non=cleaver I have run and only a couple mph slower than a 26 cleaver.
Rich is rewelding the torque tab Eagle One soldered on tomorrow. The welds are all cracked and I can flex it away from the skeg with my fingers.
I dont want to think about what would have happened at speed if either had come loose.

Just want to thank Rich at Leading Edge Propeller for the beautiful welding job he did on my torque tab today. Rich was cleaning up the area of the weld with a little pick getting some epoxy off and the whole torque tab fell off. It welded up so nice now I dont even need any filler to smooth out the weld.

Funny you mention that,....................I saw a soldering kit on sale last week at "Walmart".:D:D
If I ever meet him, I'll tell him that to his face.;):D

so....
Gettin the nosecone off was easy. Getting the gearcase back into shape, literally, was a lot of work! Had to work the gearcase with the sanding pads then fill the deep grind marks with epoxy. 2 coats of green zinc primer than two black. Sand till the green started to show on the high spots, do it again, touch up, and paint.
Before and after pics. Almost go-time!

My bone stock 2.4 merc case went 86mph before it put the passenger face down in my lap but if it had a torque tab im sure it would have went into the 90s.
Running it as high as you are i doubt ull have a problem. Nice job on the case and I cant wait to see the results

Hi Gary
Just wondered high high the propshafts were on those boats?
I wonder if the cones added transom lift and with the props that were used was too much lift?
Regards

You probably could have pulled that nosecone off ;)
If you guys haven't met Euro, he's kinda beefy. I kept giving him crap at the Suwanee run (from a safe distance) asking what his screen name meant :)
My 72 year old Dad will be down tomorrow and he wants to go for a ride. Ill get some video but not going to test his heart.

UPDATE:
I pulled off the nosecone off, cleaned it all up and put a coat of paint on it. Even though I am only running on the bottom of the nosecone I lost speed. The boat is struggling to get the bullet up on top of the water without the cone. That cone must have created a LOT of lift. At the same engine height, the boat is 8mph slower with the cleaver. I raised it up and got some of it back but the cone needs to go back on.
