40 hp mariner upgrades

I have an older 2 stroke 40 mariner outboard. I was told the only difference between a 40hp and a 50hp is the carburetors. Is this true? Thanks for any help.

A yamaha mariner is upgradeable with yamaha parts, a mercury mariner is what it is.

I think the last year for the YamaMariner was 1991 or 1992. A 2 cyl 2 carb 40 hp.
