Just put new seals in my old jack plate (land and sea) What is the original oil used in these things? Would trans oil or 5w-20w work o.k.? Figgered someone on here would know... Thanks in advance... Stuff in it now is honey colored....

Local hydraulics shop re-built the cylinder for me and got the parts for it. I had to remove the ram from the plate and re-install it... Mine worked great for 15 years, until it started leaking oil from the cyl. ram... Before the search feature died, I remember seeing a thread on these plates.. Seems like it was saying not to use atf. But I dont know for sure. I know the stuff in mine is the orig oil and def not atf. Mine never leaked dn. that prob is the check valves not working properly on yours... Maybe someone has had one of these completely apart and knows the inner workings and will post... Mine has either some spec hyd. oil, or some lt wt. motor oil in it.

O.K. After some checking around, Found some one with a oil req. sticker on their jack. The 1st choice oil for the plate is hd32WA which is 10 wt hyd oil with a wear additive pkg. (this is what it came with) (I could only find it in 5 gal buckets) Second choice is dextron atf oil. Fill with ram fully extended... Mine works like new again, and seems faster with the atf fluid.

I fixed mine on the Cougar it would leak down if wasn't all the way up. $2.00 check valve seal and had to make gskt for pump asm. Any good hyd shop should be able to repair the pump.
I think if they leak in all positions its the cyl and if holds at top but leaks down in lower positions check valve in pump is leaking. They had a few different pump designs depending on year. If the side brgs come out they can bend the ram and cause a leak.
