Hey guys,And B.K. ,I got a good one for ya!A little electro-mechanical mystery.I have a 34ft houseboat with a glass hull and a 3cyl 75hp Mariner. The boat has been used very little in the past few years and a few bugs have appeared. The little Mariner ran perfect when I got the boat,108psi on every cyl and idled very smooth. After a few weeks the idle got a little rough then I noticed I used 6 gallons of fuel when I wasnt even there!I found a leaky needle in the bottom carb and some black crap in the bowl.I replaced this and hoped my Idle was resolved but it wasnt. So here is the present senerio:
While attemting to restart after a stall the motor wouldnot crank,I turned the flywheel slightly (a couple degrees) and It cranked and started.I had this happen several times over the next couple hours and turning the flywheel wouldnot make it crank every time.Turning the flywheel and cranking connected?Im not sure.
During this learning Experience I found that when I tuned the key off the motor would keep running, even when tripping the Kill switch.Running it out of gas was the only way to stop it!Durring this period of un requested running it Idled GREAT,Didnt miss a lick, would not stall!
Another clue,While the haunted Mariner ran by itself if the chrome steering wheel and the control box were touched at the same time a really good SHOCK was received. So I touched them again SHOCK!Up one arm and down the other! This shock was like a spark plug jolt, very refreshing!I thought about rigging a
Splitfire cigarette lighter between the wheel and the control box but I dont smoke(yet). What is going on here?
Other clues: The boat is rigged with three batteries wired together,no Isolater,The battery with the "Cranking leads" connected to it was almost dead, does the voltage from the alternator come thru these leads?Have fun thinking about this one! HIGH VOLTAGE!!!!!

Open the control box and the yellow and black wire is probably grounding to the side of the box. Old age, wear and tear, vibration, typical Merc wiring deterioration, etc, etc. I'm pretty sure the spot will be obvious.

LT, I agree w/ raceman. Could it be that you are using the shifter at all when you try to restart? Movement there might be enough to jiggle the loose wire. It would also explain the no cranking. The black and yellow wire is the kill wire. Hope you find yours sooner that I did mine.

Had a 12" section of wiring harness that couldn't inspect on the V-King. It wasn't until I pulled the whole thing out did I find the break in insulation and deteriorated wire. What a headache that was.

Let me know when you are ready to put tripple loopers on that party barge.

Man,I was just about ready to split the control box when I noticed I had no powertrim also.I decieded to look at the motor for a loose wire.I found one,It has about 8-10 prongs in it!I guess someone worked on it in the past and lost the spring clip that holds the main harrness together!Man I was one happy dude when I saw that plug hanging down!
Now I gota rebuild the Carbs,It stalls at the worst possible moments!thanx guys
