The AE is a canadian built boat and you would be correct in your observations that its an HST bottom with a "traditional" deck of sorts. I've always liked them because they're different and few and far between. But, not unlike the HST, they are a heavy/heavier boat and require setback and some HP to get them to run well. My first real "fast" ride in a Hydrostream was in a 260 powered HST and it was a hoot...but very tame compared to hanging a small pad boat on the ragged edge. :D

There are several AE owners here that can provide you with much more info than I am capable of as far as glaring issues you should be aware of when looking to purchase. Good luck

Cool boats. Once you get used to riding around in one it's hard to go back to a v bottom.

I had an AE-21 8 or 9 years ago. It does need lots of power and setback to make it fly. I had a 2.4EFI Bridgeport on mine with a 9" CMC setback and 5 1/2" CMC hydraulic jackplate, spinning a Mazco RE-4 28" prop. I didn't have a GPS back then but I would say it ran in the mid 80s. It was heavy as someone else mentioned but a fun ride just the same. The AE-21 and the AE-202 had more inetrior room than the HST. There are 2 photos of mine on Hydrostream.org It is the red one with a 220Laser on it but put the 2.4EFI BP on it the next season. I sold the boat to someone local and as far as I know he still has it. Enjoy it! Gary.

Take your time and enjoy it. If you can use the 225 and get use to it while looking for an up grade OR talk to these OMC boys and they will tell you how to crank some power out of the 225.They are bow heavy, lots of set back.
I have an HST and use to run with a friend and his AE21, both had 2.4s then(no gps) but others said he ran 80+ and I ran 90+ He sold his and I sill have mine.(He could afford offshore)
You may be a little slower but when it gets bumpy you will still be running when others have headed for shore. They will take punishment, I've tried the dry side down, don't work so good hence the name, cost lots to put it back together so take your time.

guys the last i talked to him he has or is looking @ a yamaha 250 so shouldnt need a lot of set back with the heavier 4 stroke

i would think that properly set-up, it would be a good candidate for a v-8 evinrude. its a heavy boat, and you wouldn't need to give as much set back. i bet it would pull like a zr-1 once up on plane.

Any excess weight of any form you put on these hulls is detrimental. Having a pig of a motor off the back just further pinches off the tunnels.

yeah, but a lot of guys run v-6's on the hst with 14 inches or more of setback. wouldn't this be more detrimental than a v-8 with very little setback?

Thanks for all the imput and help guys,,,,,,i see theres a really really nice in the 20 less section of a hst for sale it looks great sweet ride,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but fact is and i may hate myself for it later because everyone talke about how goog these boats ride and handle but anyway ,,, been working on a project for about 2 months now seems alot longer,,,,,,,,lol,,,,,,,,,,but anyway i have my heart set on finishing a xp2003 with a yammi 250 sho on her,,family issues and christmas put it on hold but looks like its all go after the 1st,,,,so saying that i have decided that since these boats are so rare i guess is the rt word, i am going to let a stream guy or someone who will put the time in it to make it a great boat and is just what they have been looking for,,,,, besides i really enjoy wetting a hook every now and then when i am enjoyin a fine malted beverage and this boat has no place to keep my ultralite and cast net and no place for the ladies to dance like a 03 alli,,,,,and for some reason jus gotta know what that huge, huge, huge yammi is gonna look like and run like on a 03,,,,,

they really handle great it feels like the boat is on a set of rails, very comfordable ride even in moderate chop if you keep the speed down below 50s above that in moderate chop the boat tends to get flighty. But on calm water they are a riot. My mother has taken mine into the 80's before, especially with the hydrolic steering it is effortless. its great too if you can catch a day on the lake without too much traffic or too rough and go play with the offshore guys, then just walk away from them. wave and smile

Panther 150 has a Yamaha excel on the back of his with 14" setback, running just under 90. Been in it a few times this year, no porpoising, chine walking, huffing water out the front at low speeds, no drama at all. It gets up on plane quickly and is tame at all speeds. We hooked it at over 80 playing with propshaft height, the back end just shifted to the left and then settled, nothing scary. Great hull!

305644305645305646305647Here she is, best spped to date 90 mph with 14" setback , 1" above the pad with a 30p mercury lighining et at 6900 rpm. Moved the front seats back 8" from stock as well for better weight distribution and comfort. 1988 Excell with a bobs cone, and the rev limiter disconnected.

Panther - do you have a hop zone with that much setback? Beautiful boat.

panther150
09-09-2014, 01:08 PM
Thanks, and no there is no "hop zone" thats one of the things I was worried about going with a larger setback, all good, planes faster and corners well. The excell weighs comparable to a 2.5 merc I think. This is a 1991 and one of the lighter layup hulls too , paper thin on the front deck and hull underneath up front, I had a sea gull hit underneath the front last year at 80 mph and I though it came right through the hull lol.

old thread I know, but I believe it to be the rarest of the already rare AE-21's, a Spaeth built boat,1 of a dozen or less.the early ones were built by canadian edition,,,like minehttp://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k615/cajunmerc/AE-21/BE667912-E583-4DB9-97A2-37E28A3E47C3_zpsqnlpvazf.jpg~original (http://s1118.photobucket.com/user/cajunmerc/media/AE-21/BE667912-E583-4DB9-97A2-37E28A3E47C3_zpsqnlpvazf.jpg.html)
