Hi guys,
I am changing a flywheel on a 2.5L efi 260hp, do I need to adjust the timing after? Any hints or tricks on removing the flywheel easily with the puller?
Thanks

just make sure you got the merc flywheel puller screws in and tighten it down and pull it always a good idea to check the timing anyways better to be safe than sorry no tricks good luck welcome to snf

If you have a good impact gun that will pop it off if not make sure the puller bolt is tight and give it a sharp rap with a mallet. Just did my 3.0. Popped right off.

Thanks for the tips, I will give it a shot! Just wondering....why would the magnets chip or break on the flywheel? I just bought this boat and when running it last week, I heard the clacking noise and the engine basically shut down with a little bit of smoke coming out of the engine. When I looked under the flywheel I can see a few of the magnets were broken and a few small pieces were found in the engine compartment, so I bought a replacement. I also noticed that two of the spark plug tips were bent.

Be a good idea to check or replace your main bearings while you are at it.

The magnets are glued in. Sometimes they just come unglued.

I personally don't like the idea of using air impact tools to crack flywheels loose. I know that's how most guys do it, but if it's really stuck I'd rather not put a sudden shock on everything without even knowing it.
If you use just a puller and wrench and then wind up tapping with a mallet to get it loose, it is best to use a brass mallet if you have one. It is the vibrations that loosens them, not the force. The brass mallet transmits the vibrations differently.

i would say ray is right on the mains better check them out something is out of round there

Magnets on 260's are screwed on with brass screws, I recheck timing static points of reference after changing any flywheel with a JSRE TDC dial indicator to make SURE # 1 true TDC mark is indeed correct...

Well the spark plug tips didn't get bent because of the flywheel magnet pieces unless some pieces got sucked into the intake (Extremely doubtfull) but nothing is impossible. If it were me I'd have to pop the heads and do a look see.
Engine clacking, engine shuts down, Smoke coming out of engine, Spark plug tips bent

This might sound like a really stupid question because I don't know much about outboard engines, but if it is so difficult to remove the flywheel, how difficult is it to put it back on? Also where can I get that tool to check the timing? Does anyone know if where I would be able to replace the magnets, or do I need to replace the entire flywheel? I was told the later.
Thanks,
Garrett

3.0 are torqued to 125 lbs. I dont know if 2.5 are the same. You just got to figure a way to hold the flywheel from turning. I used a BIG flat blade screwdriver up against the nose of the starter and engaged a tooth on the flywheel.

If you got the rite puller it comes off as easy as butter. If ya don't want to bang it let her sit tight.....It sounds like you have other problems and need to learn or pay. Smoke can be reeds letting go some smoke or bad wires under the flywheel. Learn or pay........

JMO impacts and steel cranks don't go well together, if you hold the crank it should come off no problem, have used a heat gun on the hub not the crank before.

260 flywheel nuts are torqued to 150 Ft lbs with red loctite applied to the threads...

I use a strap wrench that I picked up at my local Fastenal store. It works great and has plenty of grip and leverage for installing and removal. You just place the strap around the flywheel and apply pressure and the crank won't spin at all.

The damaged spark plugs sound fishy......I'd have to think you've got more going on inside that engine than you think...........

i agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i doubt on a stock motor if the piston came all the way out and hit the head it wouldnt touch the spark plug. a melted piston could have done it.
i think i would do a compression test, then pull the heads, to see how bad it is...... something caused it...........

Great thanks for the tips. Anyone know where I can find an aluminum flywheel for a 2.5L efi 260hp. I just ordered one, but it is the wrong one.
Thanks,

There usually some for sale on the buy and sell forum in the misc section.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all your help. Removing the flywheel was a breeze with the right puller. Here are some pics of the broken magnets and the stator. There are some small plastic pieces melted between the stator. Do I need to replace this as well? thanks, any suggestions would greatly help.

Yes replace the stator as well. I'd also look for any damage that may have been done to the Trigger. BUT you also need to determine why those spark plug electrodes got bent??????? I'd determine that first before I spent any money on flywheel and stator. Internal issues should be resolved/determined first. Like alot have already suggested do a compression and or pop the heads. If the compression is low on those two cylinders with the bent plug tips you definately have other issues that need to be addressed.
