I have a '88 Evinrude XP 200 that I picked up to upgrade from my '83 175 crossflow. I'm being told by a local mech that this is about 150 pounds heavier than my 175, is a maintenance nightmare, etc., etc... but yet, he wants to buy it. I know the 175 is bulletproof. but I'm looking at it as 175 at the crank vs. 200 at the prop. is it that much heavier? is it a disaster motor? never ran an XP. looking to gain 10 mph or so on my 19' Glastron/Carlson with this motor and didn't think it would be an issue, but I don't want headaches... any advice?
thanks!

im no expert, but do all my own work and quite a few for others too.ive had both motors you mentioned. imho if you like the if you like the x-flow then you should love the looper for many of he same reasons.
i currently have an 88 225 as well as an 88 300
here is an idea...lets ask omc to build us a v12....i bet it would be quite the hoss...lol

A V12 might be a bit of an ask BUT a W9 was close to being built in 1999. A prototype was close to becoming a reality I was told.
The E-Tec V8 is still a possibility though. Now that WOULD be something with BRP supplying the expertise.

He'd turn around and sell it, explaining to the potential buyer what a great, bulletproof engine it is. Asshole.

Thanks for all the input guys... Any input as far as experience with these motors is greatly appreciated.
Liquid Nirvana... Thanks for the specs... I do have a question though, above the specs for the XP you wrote 200 XP (220 hp?)... Just curious what you were getting at there. Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe it is under rated?
Thanks!

Anything XP/GT usually is underrated... OMC would take a stock 150 or 200 (or what ever) a put a few performance adding parts on them (carbs, heads, porting, etc.) and call them XP/GT 150's/200's, etc.

XP = Extra Performance over stock. If you compared with the stock 200, specs appear to be the same but the latest E-Tec's in HO format we are seeing an extra 10% over the non HO engines. I think these XP's were fitted with "Boyzene" style reeds * even-fire cranks. They certainly kicked butts in their day.
Here is the brochure offering 1989 "options" thru "Second Effort"

All loopers have/had even fire cranks. Only select Xflows had them. :)

The 83 175 is basically a 150 block with 1 5/16" carbs-crank rated. Not much you can do to that block due to it's porting. I suppose you could put some old small bore 235 heads on it, but it won't compare to the looper for hp. The 220 XP should putout about 10% more prop hp than a base 200. So you are comparing 175 crank hp with 220 prop hp. big difference. You will probably need more hp than that to gain 10 mph.

thanks again for the input...
emdsapmgr... I know 10 mph sounds like alot. it was kinda a ball-park guess, give or take a few mph. keep in mind though, this is currently a completely stock set-up, 175 crank hp, bolted to the transom at stock height, with a 19p aluminum. so, I guess I was thinking 10 mph was probably reasonable (if not more) by gaining somewhere around 70hp at the prop, bolting on the jackplate I have, and playing with props (obviously a 19p won't do it! :)). honestly, there is room for improvement already, like I said, it's a stock set-up, and with the 175 it rockets up to max rpm, so I would think I could probably gain 4 or 5 mph without even going under the hood of the 175, so I was guessing that adding approx 70hp would be a huge gain, and also changing the height and the prop, not to mention any hp gain mods to the XP that anyone could suggest. I know the XP's are already somewhat "worked", but I'm sure there are some tricks out there...
grateful for all the input! is this motor going to be fairly well mannered for regular "family" duty as well? (idling, tubing, cruising, etc.)
thanks!

Looks like you have good espectations for your changes. You stand to gain as much from your planned setup changes as from the engine hp. Jackplates permit higher engine mounting which means less engine drag that could be a couple mph at 70. You may want to consider filling the top two of the 8 lower unit water intake holes on your lower unit for higher running. A good hi rake/cupped stanless will really help out. You will probably find out that you will have favorite ski (hole shot) prop (like a 4 blade) and another one (like an over-the-hub 3 blade) for high speed passes.
