Is there diff versions of Merc EFI systems

I'm looking to buy a 3.0 EFI . Are there any differences between mid to late 90's and say a 2003 . Will I use less fuel/oil with a single efi than 2 carbed 150's? Mostly idle to 3/4 throttle.

If your'e looking to save on fuel, look for an '04 or newer Optimax

thanks bum, If the price on a nice 04' or better Opti presents itself ,it'll seriously be considered. Still my original question lingers, is there a generation 1, gen 2, on 3.0 Merc EFI? Happy Thanksgiving all!

pres 2001 is gen 1 2001-2003 is gen 2 and 2005+ is gen 3
