My dad has an 89' Johnson 300 V8. He went to drop his gearcase to do a re-seal yesterday and the driveshaft was frozen to the powerhead. This has happened before and it took quite the effort to get it un-stuck. When we re-installed the gearcase/driveshaft, we replaced that little o-ring at the top of the shaft and greased it liberally. Is there anything else that we can do to try and prevent this from happeneing again. It's a pain in the butt.

Dave try some antiseize instead of grease. My experience has been that over time, the south Florida heat and hot running engines cuase the grease to "run out". Haven't had the problem with antiseize. It seems to stay in place despite the heat. Just my $.02

I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Also, pull it off at least once a year..... time is your second worst enemy

Did you glue the oring into the driveshaft groove or just place it there?

Did you use regular marine grease on the splines or the factory recommended Moly Lube that comes with the water pump kits?

When you reinstall, look through the upper motor mount and you can see the bottom of the crank where the splines go in. make sure the o ring is in the right spot, and didnt roll down when you were putting it back in.
I just went through hell getting my drive shaft out of my V8. if you cant get it, give me a call.

It was off less than a year ago and we did use the moly grease. What would you use to glue the o-ring in place?

Update: We were able to get the l/u off again. Have to get a new base gasket though. Driveshaft is slightly rusted and the o-ring was nowhere to be found. Wierd...
