These are out of a Gen two Alpha.

I have heard that the CLE gears have a larger hole thru reverse gear, for the prop shaft to fit thru?

If they do work, I won't be able to use the heavy duty bearing carrier and bigger prop shaft out of the CLE. ?

When you say Out board gear case thats a very broad statement !! Some alpha gears works on some 3.0 cases your really opening a can of worms Mercruiser gearsets are unnumberable!! i have a ice chest full of gears and shafts that i used to try and use up when a early style 3.0 showed up but its so confusing i stopped trying to use them i just bought new gear sets or used ones that were for the correct application. i have entire set of early model CLE gears heavy carrier and all thats the small shaft 1.3/16 dia they had dual bearing stacked end to end inside the carrier. dont see those much any more . For a normal application (pleasure boater) or even surfacing a prop i have ZERO problems with standard Fishing motor case's and guts im only running mid 80's so that may be the difference might Check with FLYBOY from ill. he is now running standard gears and shafts in his drag boats with stock case coned. a 3.0 carrier with slight mods helps with prop shaft flex that causes seals to blow out!! What happened to your deal on the cle gears

They won't fit in a CLE. 3 liter cases yes they will fit and work in some applications.

John the easiest thing for you to do is take the later style reverse gear with the thrust washer thats recessed to a machine shop and have it ground out to a 1.40 thous. I.D. and use a CLE ,Sporty thrust washer so your gear column wont be to long. i have done it several times after all the only difference in Fishing motor gears and HI PO is the Bernelle hardness of them with the exception of the reverse gear hole thats it. By the way that gear number will not be in a sequence with the other two they are also sold separately gears from a mid 90s 200 are numbered like so forward and Pinion are 44 104,44105 reverse is 824986A2 it DOES NOT have to be a 44103 to be correct Just a FYI BobbyV

PS which ClE carrier do you have if you have the short one then the old style reverse gear will work if you have the long one same as Sporty it wont work

I think I have a set of CLE gears comming, but a friend mentioned that he had an Alpha gear case that had good gears in it, thats why I was asking.

Texas, I can let you know what those gear numbers are tonight.....

I think I probably have the shorter HD carrier, neither one has the drain plug in the back of it.

These are going in a coned 200 case.

John You never did get me your gear numbers you may already have what you need and dont know it

Here are the numbers on the gears that were sent to me to be a matching set.

43-44101 (two bearings inside, and taper bearing on outside)

43-824981 (flat bearing, no inner bearing)

64459GG 813688 ? (pinion)

Another set I have, but don't look as good are;

44-104/2

43-44105

44103...43

Not sure I can make any matching numbers on any of these.......?

John The first set is a mixture 44101 is a 2.1 Gear its a forward, Flatbearing gear is Reverse out on mid 90's but the last number is wrong its gotta be a 6 for a 1.87 or a 7 for a 2.1 gear , pinion is Hipo number CLE, Torqmaster ,sporty!!!! second set is 1.87 set its a matching set

Hmmm....sounds like I was ALL KINDS of ripped oFf on the first set that was supposed to me a matching set of 1.87.....you are saying that one of those in that set were for a 2.1?...no wonder they wouldn't fit for the first guy trying to put them in for me.......SH*^&%%$ !!!!

The second "matching" set that is 1.87 looks kinda rough to use......I doubt my builder whould even put them in for me.......**** !!

Thanks for your help with those numbers.....I guess I will take another chance with ONE MORE set of used gears from S&F......If I get ripped off again......I will just give up on boating......

John i have bought so many bogus BS parts from people (some on Scream and Fly) its not funny Most People really dont know what they are selling they dont have an answer so they make one up so they can Sound Knowledgeable. i dont know everything by a long shot but i know a little something about gearcases;) on the gear numbers typically the 2.1 sets are numbered in a sequence just like the 1.87. 2.1 are 43 44101,102,103 and 1.87 are 43 44103,104,105 these are the first Alpha numbers later years changed a couple of times but thats not important I have heard of some folks dropping a 15 tooth pinion(1.87 on the 2.1 gearset and claim it works i dont know if it does or it does not i have never tried it i was of the mind set if it was the same gear why dont it have the same number.I rebuild cases every week if you were closer i would build you one while you looked on its a piece of cake Good luck Bobby V.

Lots of good knowledge here...thanks...

I have taken a few apart, and put them back together....but its the settin up (backlash and all) that I don't have the knowledge or the tools for....

Yes you must have a preload kit which will include not only the way to load the drive shaft ( put pressure vertically up) and test pinion height which is 25 thousandths on just about all V6 cases but the stud and sweep to test your forward gear lash is also in there ,you will have to get a dial indicator to read lash you must also load the propshaft with Merc's puller and 40 ft lbs of push its sound like more then it is
