I have a new lightweight cowl (new, never mounted, from Eagle One) and about to start cutting holes for mounting. Me question is has anyone tried some other type of latches other than the type Mercury(or Eagle One) make. I use my boat for sking as much as going fast and the ski ropes will tend to hang up on these rubber bungees. I thought of going to aircraft suppliers and seeing what they have in the way of lowprofile latches(and yea I know they would cost an arm and a leg) but hey,why try to be a cheapskate at this point? Besides, why take a chance of the thing blowing off at 80mph?
So, any ideas people?:D

Look in McMaster Carr catalog. I have one and there are lots of really cool fastners. There are "push in and turn" ones that are almost totally flush. I'm sure you'll find what you need there.

I have seen come on the lightweight Yamaha cowls from Wayne Worthy @ Hydro-Tec. He used to sell them separately as a kit. You might check with him. They were small and light, looked good and held really well.

JimB, the old Twister 2 cowl was restrained with 3 hood pins through the top. Until just recently, all Merc's liftoffs had one pin in the rear as an additional safety catch against the cowl coming off. These brackets are available from Merc (expensive) or floatin' around used. You could always fabricate a bracket for the top front for the same function. If your Eagle 1 cowl is the Alien style the old Merc bracket probably won't reach anyway.

Check the motor protection bar on this triple rig Hydrodyne. This is the best way to keep the ropes off of your motor. They will scratch it too.

http://www.mcmaster.com/

Do a search with latches, even then there is alot of weeding to do.

I realize the first thing you need is latches. But a clearance bar is the ticket to keep the rope from scratching the motor. And to keep the rope out of the steering cables and the prop.

I built one for mine

the motor protector bar, you could use an inexpensive truck style rubber tie down which is much cheaper that Merc:
