How many "reliable" hp can be made starting with a 280 and keeping the rpms around 7500? (pump gas of course) I know swapping to 260 electronics and winding it up is the "preferred" way to go but I found it was not as fishable as I would like.
Thanks

You have to give up something to get something. More power, less reliability otherwise Mercury would be building a 400 hp engine turning 5800 rpm with a 10 year warranty. For example: the 300 drag is a NO WARRANTY engine from the factory. A 2.5 200 is just peaking HP at 7100-7200rpm. A 260 is peaking around 7700-7800 rpm. The 300 drag peaks around 8200-8400 rpm. Although any of these can turn well above the peak rpm, this is where the peak is on a dyno under a load.

Vinnie,
Building tons of these motors a season I find our modified 280's enjoy a LONGER run life than stockers do. The attention to detail in bore prep/ roundness , ring end gap matching, sealing ring lapping, matching weights as well as taking time on detail during assembly methods and block casting clean ups that a production line motor simply does not have WILL make more noticeable power as well as lengthen the motors run life... You WILL feel the difference, haven't built one yet that the customers hasn't raved about the idle quality with lapped reed cages W/ TDR reeds , Brucato cleaned and calibrated injectors, increased fuel economy as well as increased power through out the power range from BOTTOM to top.... Our motors mods do NOT kill the bottom end as some mods do in fact I can INCREASE the torque on the bottom....

Gentlemen, where is the peak hp (dyno) normally on a 280?
Thanks
