View Full Version : DVA Meter Etc
I'm looking for a DVA meter/quality multimeter.
What are the preferences/options you guys have.
I'm after something compact, rugged, reliable etc all at a cost that I don't have to get a loan for. This is for personal use only
What other tools are considered key in maintenance/fault finding for outboards, ie: timing light, comp guage
Thanks

DVA meter I prefer Fluke although Mercury uses a ES PM-1. Which is a multimeter. You can sometimes pick up a Fluke multimeter cheap on e-bay and get a peak reading adaptor from RAPAIR.
Good compression guage
Timing light, inductive type
Electrical tester (light type)
TDC indicator or dial indicator with spark plug thread adaptor. I believe JSRE now has one about $40
Inspection light, (Bend a Lite)
Everything else gets specialized or just good hand tools.

Cheap tools I like: Autozone $5 spark tester(wanted a peak reader, but lots of $ for the backyarder), Electronic Specialties RPM clamp on tach $56(sometimes have to use long wire to get away from other wires), DVOM meter $10-15 for whatever tests with AC and DC.
Yeah, Fluke is one of/if not the best. Worked at places with them.

I use the Fluke/Rapair combo..I have had it for years..That meter has had the crap knocked out of it and has never failed on me..There are all kinds of accesories for the fluke also..I like having the digital readout over the analog..

I can get you the DVA adapter if you can't buy direct from Rapair.

I got a suprisingly inexpensive one from my merc dealer. I'ts the one that the merc mechanics use at the shop (had a merc P.N.)
I paid about $130 CAD for it which would be about $83 US.
I can get the P.N. off the meter if you want.
Burke - Part # would be appreciated.
Will any Fluke multi meter(with DVA adaptor) suffice - can anyone suggest a specific Fluke

What is a DVA and what does it do? Can you use a regular digital multi meter and get an adapter? What tests does this preform? Thanks!
Tom
It doesn’t have to be a Fluke, many other inexpensive digital multi meters will work fine.

But I think any meter that has a 3/4" space on the lead plug-ins will accept the rapair adaptor..just set it on DC volts.. DVA or Peak Reading is what will read voltage outputs on most any outboard ignition systems. A regular voltmeter will not work..
Any voltmeter with good RF shielding will work as long as it has the standard spacing.

the P.N. changes up to 91-99750A 1, it lists for $163 CAD which turns into $104.42 US
If you're "in" with your Merc dealer they can give you a price cut, they did for me. (I spend enough there!!!!!!!!)
