I'm restoring a 50 year old fiberglass cat/hydro hull, 13'-11" long, 450 lbs. Will be running a `63 Merc 1000, no PTT, and has a 48 65748 A1 17P prop. It looks like the prop will be running in the dirty water from the tunnel if raised above the 2nd trim hole. From what I've read I would need to use a cleaver style prop. Is a cleaver what I need & if so what pitch should I start with?

Thanx

if you want to keep the same rpm you will need to come down in pitch with adding a blade

i aint seen one of those props since i left the prop shop

I think I have one of those out in the shop, is it still something someone would want?

The motor came with a 17P aluminum 3 blade prop. I would like to switch to a cleaver style to run in the air/water mix where a standard prop fails.

Will I need to increase pitch switching to a cleaver?

What 3 pitches would you choose for trials?

Thanx!

Thanx Terry thats what I was thinkin'. I have been reading up on hi perf props and they seams to act like rear end gears in a car. The blade shape seems to act much like tire tread & composition do. I've done a lot with cars. I picked up a used 21P cleaver, found a 19P looks rusty in the pic he wants $125 I offered $100 he said no. No luck finding a 17P cleaver yet, was thinking about maybe a 17P 4-blade also. The early 1960's Mercs 1000 is almost 100lbs lighter than a modern Merc 100hp. I'm used to having ptt on outboards, gives a lot wider range of perfomance. Was thinking to also bring a small setback hyd jack plate. The boat was rated for 100hp by the mfg.
