Hope this hasn't already been posted, but I'm looking to see which is better for the application below:

90hp Yamaha 2 Stroke

OR

90hp Mercury 2 Stroke

Application:

16.5 foot Alumacraft Magnum CS - 950lbs
#1 Driver: 350 lbs
#2 Passenger: 200 lbs
#3 Passenger: 200 lbs
- Gear: 150lbs
- Fuel: 20 Gallons
- Batteries: 50lbs x 3

2273lbs

What would be the better engine to push this amount all day long? The larger displaced Mercury 90hp or the lighter Yamaha 90hp? And why?

Also would the Mercury be better to throw a Merc Trophy Plus or would the Yami be better to throw it?

Thanks a million!

Scotty

My dad has a 16.5 ft smokercraft, which would be very similar to your boat I would think. He has the 2 stroke merc. on it. It's no speed demon, but it always runs. Last year he forgot to put stable in the gas over the winter, so it had issues this spring when he first took it out. I think he replaced the plugs in it and it was fine. He has a 17" aluminum junk prop on it now. It over-revs with anything less than 4 people and full livewells. I realize this probably doesn't help you in the least bit, but thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

The mercury will do two things faster, push the boat and drain your wallet. The smaller Yamaha is of a very old design and only has had minor changes over the last 26 years. The cubic inch displacement of 69 cubic inches with a 2;1 gear ratio has never changed in the U.S. Market. Give me the Yammi and a 13 1/4 x 17 turbo stainless prop at 5800 rpm. anyday. Thanks Martin

Its not my boat its my friends boat. I'm the guy with the tow vehicle haha. I told him both are good but he keeps pushing me to see which is better. So I posted. He knows it won't hit lightspeed and I've told him that countless times. He wants to see 35mph and he'll be happy.

His budget is $3000. Which he doesn't understand why outboard cost so much. I told him to save his dough and go for a nice 90 Yamaha 2 stroke w/ CF reeds and a good prop. I might be a friend and pitch $1000 with him for something a little better.

What is easier to rebuild and work on? Like I'm rebuilding a similar displacement to the Yamaha engine, the Merc 650 from the late 70's. Both are around 800cc +/- 100cc

There was a Yamaha F90 4 stroke previously attached to the hull. Would the holes line up the same as the 90 2 stroke Yami?

Thanks guys, keep the comments/opinions coming.

BTW - I don't know in the states there but here in winter wonderland its the Merc 50/90/150 EFI last year for sales.

FAIL!

The 2.5hp thru 30hp is built in Japan. The 40, 50, 60hp is built in China. Everything else is built in Fond Du Lac, WI.

He's looking at USED outboards...it makes very little difference to the economy where his used outboard was built...

The F90 has the same bolt pattern as any full size outboard (40hp+)...so either will bolt right on the boat. Either engine will do the guy just fine...which is better...well...the merc has merc electronics and to quote the guy above me..."FAIL!!".

Its not the F90.

FAIL!

Oh..but it is...in reference to the previous motor on the boat :)

Even more reason to stay with the Yamaha...if it's still got the rigging it's a simple plug and play.

I am sticking with FAIL!

The F90 has the universal bolt pattern but that did not answer the question if the 2 stroke 90 will bolt up. The correct answer is yes, both 90's will bolt up to where the F90 was.

The OP is going to have to go with the Mercury now after see how owning a Yamaha just makes you wrong all the time.

Just kidding

According to the previous owner and the marina where we bought this boat from the F90 blew up! I asked how and they wouldn't tell me :S. I was just curious. If it was an Evinrude I would automatically understand ;) but a Yamaha... probably started it out of the water... dumbass.

Anyways guys, I'm trying to steer him away from more power which sounds silly but I know he'll bite off more than he can chew. He was joking around and said a 150hp and I said XR2.

Will mods to the 90hp Yami make it less reliable? Like the high perf megaphone tuner from HydroTec? Don't hate, just wonderin.

I did heads, reeds, tuner, jets, and solid mounts to the 2.6l and didn't notice anything in reliability. That was almost three years ago now and one of the reeds is on it's way out. quite a long time for a CF reed though I think. Over 150 hrs.

I am Yammi all the way, most of you know that. In this heavy fishing situation, the larger cubes and 2.33 gearing of the Merc will prevail. I think the Yammi will be less mantinance in the long run and I think the Yammi is easier to work on. If you go Yammi, NO HYDROTEC. and for sure not the tuner, that will kill bottom end and thats the last thing you will need to do on the sugested rig. Reeds will not help that situation either, compression, jetting, and more than anything else, either engine, setup and prop. Keep in mind YOU said fishing boat not RACE.

If you are even remotely considering modifying it, get the Yamaha. The Mercury has the head and block in one casting.

After the Yamaha, the second-best engine in that class is the Tohatsu.

**** I totally forgot that Tohatsu made/makes 2 strokes!

Ya its a pure fishing boat for sure, I was getting ahead of myself. BTW why not Hydrotec?

He is also wanting to look at a V4 Yami 115 2S but I told him to stick with the 90hp Yamaha mostly because he couldn't afford a good 115.
