this winter i have decided to start the rigging of my delta. I will be checking i with the board, looking at suggestions, and how to make this boat go fast. I would love to hear everyones oppinon on what i should do with the boat and will need all the help and all the ideas i can get when rigging this. Right now i have no power, so all suggestions are appretiated. I am thinking an old stinger or hustler will make this run best. I also have a 5.5 inch manual jackplate i want to see how that can help me out.

Pete.

That transom looks strong as hell, are you doing the project with your dad ( in the background?) remeinds me of the 13 foot D Class Raceboat I was building with my dad, its still on the garage roof. I should finish that off. Anyway good looking boat. Are you in canada? I am from toronto, at school in montreal, wishing i was boating right now. Sold my checkmate mx-15 at the beginning of the summer but rode in my 2 best friends rigs all summer, even drove em' sometimes . anyway, what are u setting it up with power wise etc. peace.

hey,
im actually doing the project with my grandfather. He has experiance with fixing boat transoms, and is a very smart person. That is actually my brother in the picture, i had to take it, because if i didnt take it, it probably woulndnt come out like i liked it ;) my brother actully just bought a hydrostream voodoo, we will be picking it up on sunday this week. I will post pics when i get them.

My friend that owns the vector pictures used to have a mean voodoo with a 60 mariner, jack plate, ss prop and some work done to the engine. He got speeds in the low 70's with that rig. Man that was a fun boat to fly around into the bar in. Good luck with the rigging of both. What are you planning to power them with?

Pete
11-01-2002, 09:15 PM
well for power i was thinking a 70 or 75 jonshon or evi for the delta. I also have a jackplate for it that i will be using. For the voodoo i think my brother will put on a 60-75 motor, not sure what kind yet. im planing on runing cleavers on both boats, because thats what ive herd run fastest.
any sugestions?

Hey Pete, When the voodoo was running it had a chopper on it, I think it was 18" but im not sure. I will talk to timdogg and get back to you. Those engine selections should run well on those hulls. Tell your brother to pick up a jack plate because you want to get that propshaft pretty even with the pad on the voodoo. I would go manual. I think the one tim had was designed for application on a 40 but worked well with the mod 60.

Pete...Ive had alot of experience with the small vee bottoms, the main way to have the boat setup is to have the best power to weight ratio. With the delta you are fixing up now i would think a good engine with a good amount of power output would be a modified 50 omc 2 clyinder. You can have it modified to put out 70hp with little modifications. And it only weighs 170lbs.

hey, thanks for the imput airide BUT im really crossing my fingers on a deal i have made. I found a 75hp Johnson short shaft. Today i am calling the guy and will try to see if i can put a deposit on the motor, so he can keep it for me untill spring. I really hope i can get this motor!

Is it a stinger or just a stock 75?3cly johnson is a good long lasting engine had one on my little airide for a while but modified my 50 to put out more HP than the 70.

Pete

i think this motor is a stock 3cyl johny. im not sure though, i will hopefuly be seeing this motor the coming weekend or shortly after

If you need a High Perf gearcase for that delta ive got a SST60 gearcase for sale 15'' shaft length. Its in great condition. You caould gain up to 4 MPH is you ran this case over a stock if not more. Also the boat would handle better since there would be less turbulance around the nosecone.Just givin ya some info!!!!

hey
im interested in that gearcase, but cant come up with the money right now. I will probably still be interested in the case if you still have it in 2 or three months. what are you looking to get for it?

I paid 750 for it a month ago but im geting a 45ss so i have no need for it.I would sell for about 700 obo.Ive also put more money into the case(brand new gears and water pump).I will probably still have it in a few months. Its alot of money but thats what plays a key role in making your boat go faster than every one elses!!!!:D I always like to be the fastest!!!!:D

well right now, i have epoxey on it to cover all the wood, im not sure if i will be putting fiberglass on it. i figured the epoxey would keep the water from getting in.

Done any work on your boat for the new year?

Pete
01-22-2003, 03:57 PM
hey,
i havnt done any work on it yet because the boat is still at the cotage and from what i hear there is about 3 or 4 feet of snow up there.
i was wondering how i was going to mount my jackplate? do i just screw it onto my transom and than drill the holes in the pattern of my motor?

Pete

airide18
01-22-2003, 04:11 PM
WEll you could have some one hold the jackplate in place and then you mark the holes with a pencil.

Pete
01-22-2003, 04:37 PM
hey, here is the jackplate, im guessing this the side you bolt on the transom. so i just trace my bolt patern, drill the holes than fasten with what? im guessing some sort of stainless nut/washer/bolt of some sort

Pete

Pete
01-22-2003, 04:42 PM
and this side i mount the motor on? is it the same process? trace bolts, drill than fasten?

Yes all you need are some 1/2" SS bolts with some washers and the nuts.I have little 1"X1" alumminum blocks that i use for washers that help the transom stay nicer for when you take the nuts off the transom isnt all squashed around where the nut was tightened.

I drilled my holes bigger, then painted in there with epoxy a couple times; drilled again the right size. Then gooped it all with that 5200 stuff and glued the whole motor right on there. Did the transom trim cap with it too on mine. That is the stuff to use! I have big washers in the inside of the hull.

airide18
01-22-2003, 09:54 PM
Sho305....You used the 5200 as a sealiant?Anything will work,if you can find a clear cauk that would work great.Just anything to keep the water out of the wood in the transom.

Pete
01-22-2003, 10:00 PM
so what im hearing from you guys is that i should predrill the hols maybe 1/8" bigger than the bolts i have, than seal up the hole with some sort of sealer that will keep the water out of my transom. than when the sealer dries up redrill the holes to the size of SS bolt i will be using.

if i have misunderstood please corect me

Pete

Wow slow down here, you make the holes so the bolst fit tight in them and you put sealiant around the bolts when puting them through the transom.

Well, having spent (what seemed like) 2,000 hours putting a transom in this thing....and not wanting the bolt holes to rot it again:rolleyes: I wanted to make it right and not do it again!!! So it is up to you.:)

It was all new, and yes I drilled it close to 1/8 bigger size...I think my bolts are only 3/8 on the bottom. I taped the hole on the outside and Q-tipped the *epoxy resin* in there twice to make sure. The idea is to get it to soak into the wood there. Then drilled it a hair over 3/8...25/64 I think.

The 5200 is just plain awesome stuff. Looks like white silicone, but is way tuffer and it sticks. Very hard to pull off with bare fingers. It is only 8-10 bucks for a tube, way cheap insurance for me; and I had to do my drains too. It does not keep for long though. People here said it was the best thing to use for that. If you look, most sealers are not rated for underwater use, this is. They have this putty from the old days, but who wants that? I think it is urethane actually, the stuff that holds car windshields in, only this is white not black. You can let a strip of it dry and use it for rope.

Most say to do the bolt with sealer at the skin of the hull, or under the motor/plate. Then leave the inside unsealed so if it leaks you can see it and fix it. I filled the bolt hole up inside, and out. If my boat gets caught in the rain and flooded, I did not want it getting wet from the inside. Once the water gets in, you is screwed! In this Bayliner, the bolts are pretty close to the floor, a couple inches of rain would get them. Sometimes I leave the boat in overnight, and I do not trust bilge pumps.

If you are going to have it apart all the time, I would not worry so much about it, as you will reseal it then...most peope do not. I had extra, so I put it under the motor clamps and transom pad for extra cusion and sealing, and hoped the motor would not vibrate/wear in the skin as well. Hope I can get it off if I ever need to.

The coolest way is to drill it big and epoxy a pipe in the hole that fits your bolt, so you are tightening on the pipe, not the wood. Like a bushing for the transom. There is a thread here someplace about that.

You got the WOW post in there while I was doing it. Ya gotta be able to type dude!! This is the NEW MILLENEUM:) :) Computers is where its at! Oops, had to chat with the wife there a minute. There is a freak in a house near where her boss lives, it was on the news. Not that I like typing....it is just way easier than writing by hand.

SHO, I also looked for the tread about using the pipe nipple in the bolt holes. I can't seem to find it any where. Bummer, I was planing on doing the same thing when I rig my checkmate.
Let me know if you remember where you saw it. That was good stuff.
