I was out playing with the boat today, and since I have this bad habit of randomly taking things apart, I pulled the ECU off the motor and popped it apart to take a look inside and see if there are any adjustments. It's a '97 225 PM and the circuit board says Cummins Electronics! How about that!

Makes sense why them darn things are so smokey!!!! That's really cool. If I remember right Cummins used quite a bit of Motarola stuff so it could be that badged Cummins. Either way, pretty trick.

Marine Engineering Group (posts on here) had a prototype that I went and looked at for military application. Good product, well executed prototype, but I believe the marketing just wasn't right.

I don’t know if it was so much the marketing but more so the cost, weight, performance etc. A diesel outboard will have a VERY limited market. I could see one on a toon, commercial fishing rigs and other workboats. Also would be good where gasoline is not advisable due to flammability. I think it's a great idea but somehow the cost would have to come down to justify it. Fuel consumption should be excellent though.

In concept I'd agree there would be a good use for a hard working diesel outboard, but as you stated there's something that's kept that from happening, cost, weight etc. what ever it might be................

Yanmar made diesel outboards. http://www.yanmar.com.au/marine/d_series/dseries.htm

I've seen one of these in my day and it was in a scrap yard with hole in it. I can't imagine they would live very long at 4500 RPM if ya held em there all day. Yanmar is a very good product but that's quite a bit of RPM for sustained usage.

Mercury makes a jp-8 outboard for military use JP-8 and diesel are really close. The navy doesn't want take carry gas anymore on ships so the more things that run off of JP-8 the better.
