Even though they didn't make a dent in Merc's OPC racing reputation a few dollars went a long way in west coast outboard drag racing, more than once Chryslers held the quarter mile record.....

For the past year or so, I have been a casual observer of this board. It is one of the best kept secrets on the net which in a way is a shame.

Sam, where DO you find all these COOL pics ????

Don't worry boys, your secret is safe with me. :p

Its a secret, Jeff. If I told you it would make it harder for me to find more....:D

Are you the Jeff Lytle that raced pro hydros ? Did you used to work at Thornlea Lumber many years ago. If you did I bought T-88 epoxy from you to fix my 10' Tunnel Hull that Steve Kew built in high school.
Welcome to the board.

Jeff Lytle

Yep, that's me. Steve and I were roomates for a time back then too. Our wall of fame included my 2 High Point and 1 National Champ paques for PRO, and his High Point, Speed Record and National Champ awards for Inboards. Quite the show for visitors.

YA MON!!! 127 on your knees, Dat guy has the balony, that's a fact !!

Here's another description Sam will remember, I posted it on another board we visit. This I remember hearing sitting around a campfire on a Sat. night. Beer was surely a factor !!

Remember now Boys, where Sam and I come from, there is no comfy seats OR passengers!! We KNEEL !! :D

"Kneeling on a piece if 1/4" Plywood, going 100 miles an hour, with the wind trying to rip your face off"

Don't forget to add the odd sponson walk to make it interesting too.

Flat Out

So it is you. Great. Haven't seen Steve recently. I stop by his shop once in a while. I know he got out of racing years ago. I did get the chance to drive his 280 boat "Its Quick" years ago when I was about 19. I think he had the most fun with that boat. He did well with it. I think the GP boat became real expensive , real fast. Too much work with running the shop.
Do you still have any of your old race boats ?

Mark75H
10-31-2002, 05:47 PM
I had to look at the photo a little more. I think he is on his knees with his butt against the fuel tank.

Oh, yeah.....this particular he is......Gary Ferguson, the same guy that drove the laydown, enclosed capsule Carlson to set a speed record. He is also the driver of the triple Chrysler 4 point Powercat racer.

The boat pictured above was named Drag N Fly. The owner was Jack Oxley. In the early 60's Jack won more than his share of pleasure boat marathons. One magazine even named him "Marathon King". The boat was built by Ron Jones. Other drag boats of the time were Westbrook, Powercat, Carlson and one other that escapes me right now.

Last I heard of Mr. Oxley, he was still living in Long Beach, still in boat racing, but now he enjoys the safety of radio controlled models.

I finally found my lost albums of photos and have started scanning more of them. Thought I would start with these of the Scott team racers from the early years, Jack Oxley, Danny Snead, and
Bob Kies.

Jack Oxley does currently live in the Long Beach area and still races radio controlled model boats. Here is a link to our web site for model boats of a photo of Jack with his 1/8th scale Unlimited Hydroplane, the Lincoln Thrift.

He has had a few heart operations (which means he now brings his lovely wife along with him) and we race every month together. He is still going strong......................and so are his boats.

Al:
I have these photos above of Jack that are original 8x10
black & white glossys. If I had a few copies made up
and mailed to you, do you think Jack would mind autographing
them? I know of some McCulloch collectors that would love to
have them. I have no intention of selling them, these would be
for myself and others of us that remember those years fondly and
would like to have them as keepsakes.
Or better yet here is an idea, looks like there are a few of the
west coast boat racing legends that are involved in R/C racing. Maybe your group could use these as a fund raising effort.
Just a thought....
Regards,
Danny Leger

Danny,
I am sure that Jack would be more than happy to sign your photos.
The link I posted where the photo of Jack was located is our district model boating web site. There is a race schedule on there. I do not know where you are located but Jack appears at all of the Scale Unlimited races and a few gas races. I know that he will be at Prado Park, Chino, CA. the end of this month (March 30) and then we move to Legg Lake in S. El Monte which is the Los Angeles area.

Fund raiser??? That is a good idea......except I don't know how many of our boaters would like Jack's signature on a photo.........he has signed plenty of our hulls with his blue and yellow paint.
:)

If you would like to send photos..........

Yes, this was a little before the Chrysler racing lower units were ready. Oxley, Kies and Snead had a hand in the Chrysler as well as the McCulloch and transfered some of (but not all) their successful ideas from the McCulloch racing lower unit to the Chrysler.

Can you blow up the black and white of the engines with stacks?
It looks like the engines might have been fuel injected. I tried to blow it up but I lost all the resolution.

Man! these are some good pics.

Hi Sam. I set the OB 1/4 record in 1985 at 133.92MPH/8.51ET. In "The Toy" With Merc at St Louis in the American Drag Boat Association. Also in 1985 I set the IHBA record at 129.87 at Firebird in Phoenix. Prior to those records Blake Justice had the ADBA record at 128.38 in 1984 at Oak Ridge TN. Prior to that Larry Boyd? from Texas had the SDBA record of 126 and change. Where do you find record of Gary running 127 in the standing quarter mile in the early 1970's? Not questioning YOU Sam, would just like to see the documentation.

Footnote 5 means the speed record was U.I.M. certified as a world speed record. Foot note 4 means it was just a U.S. speed record.

WOW!!! That is really impressive for an outboard in the standing 1/4 mile in 1971. Again, I was not questioning you, I just had not seen the documentation. I have learned that your vast knowledge of racing history is unparalled. Thanks for the post. Much credit to Jack and Gary. Of course all the associations when I set the records allowed only one engine.:D Thanks again Sam. (Humble pie not too bad tasting!):o :o

Barron, as I was looking this up I was thinking you were a peer to Jack and Gary, well deserving of mention in the Who's Who of Outboard Racing. If I have time I'll enter you and Blake later today. :)

Yes, that is Gary Ferguson's Twister. Must be fuel injection, there are no carb float bowls ;) The belt drive is probably fuel pump for fuel injection.

Sam, In post #33 in the pic, what are the plates on the port side of the engines, part of the exhaust system? The DSH's have exhaust snouts but they look mighty clean.
Did you get a PM from me last week?

Sam, in the pic in this post, #33 what are the plates or whatever on the port side of the engines? Is it part of the exhaust? Deflectors? The DSH's have exhaust snouts, but they look mighty clean.
Jack and Gary sure had some nice rigging/engineering for the time, didn't they?

Yeah those are to help keep water out of the completely open exhaust.

Got your PM, but I'm running a bit behind
