Hey guies i have a tech ? for yall. I have a buddy w/ a 2004 90 mercury 2 stroke he stuck a piston about a year ago and i repaired it .He decided just to rebuild it the cheap way so what we did was disasembled the power head, cleaned the bore w/ a bottle brush it came out clean , replaced the piston w/ a used one w/ new rings and reasembled the power head the motor runs great idles good ,the compression was 110 on all 3 cylinders. they had a lot of hours on the motor. Now the problem it just started this last week at idle it poors smoke out soon u rev it or take off in gear it stops he wanted me to remove the oil injection. Can it be the oil injection? Can it be a piston ring? Any help would be appreiciated thanks

Disconnect the injection and pre-mix to see if the problems go away.

Does the engine idle rough also? I had a similar problem recently with my 260, it was the low side of the stator not firing but 3 cyl until it reached around 2000 rpm, replaced the stator and running fine. You can take a timing light and check this pretty easy, take the plugs out hook the light up to the plug wires one at a time and spin it over if the light don't fire then it's a good indication it's the stator. Good luck! Jimmy

I just did one withthe same symptoms, the two crankcase bleeders behind the reed plates were stuck closed, along with two out of the three on the side of the block. Replaced them, a synch of the carbs and problem be gone.

He still wants to remove the oil injection from the motor the only thing that i cant rember is do u have to split the crank case in half in order to get the gear out once u remove the pump or it will just pull right out? When i did mine i had to split the case in order to rebuild it anyways. This is on a 2004 90 mercury 2 stroke elpto thanks

Is it black or Grey smoke? Black smoke indicated excessive fuel that isn't being burned off, grayish smoke is excessive oil, what do the spark plugs look like?
