Hi everyone!!
I've got a 200xs which is making a funny 'phutting' noise, kinda like if you removed a spark plug and then ran the engine, the noise the air would make rushing from the hole.
Seems the noise is coming from the compressor, can't think of anywhere else it could be coming from, and the motor seems a little down on power.
Any ideas of what it could be? Is there any way I can check the compression system?
Any help greatly appreciated!!
Cheers, James

Sounds like one of the hoses or fittings are leaking the compressed air needed to run the engine. Spray some soapy water on the hoses and fittings while the motors running. If theres a leak it should show it by blowing bubbles.

Cool, I'll give that a shot. Apparently these vent excess air to atmosphere via a little hose? Could that be what it is? I've never heard one making this kinda noise before... Anyone know much about em?

I have two optimax motors and have never heard any excess air coming out of mine. Have had the hoses/fittings leak and found it with the soapy mix.

What opti's were they? Did you have vent hoses from the compressor or anything on them?

The Opti's will give you some "puffing" noise by nature. The best thing to do is to check your air pressure at the rail, if you have any leaks or a problem with the compressor, it will show low pressure.

One is a 2004 225, one is a 2006 225. 04 motor has (no kidding) 1600 hours and has gone thru 2 compressors. Never rebuilt. Still has good compression. I use it as a spare motor. On one comp. the bearings started knocking. The second one locked up. Not enough oil going to them imo. The 06 motor has 800 hours and has not had one problem from the day when I installed it. I would bet that a new compressor will have to be installed on the 2006 fairly soon, but no problems yet.... On the hoses...Two hoses are water in and out. (cooling) Water comes thru a filter on side of adapter plate area. Port side. Two hoses are air in and out. Have you ever replaced the air filter on the compressor intake hose? It's on the airbox on most of them, largest hose from compressor to filter. Post some pics of yours and a better qualified tech will get it figured out...

Thanks very much for the help guys, I'll try to get some pics up asap, and will have a look over the hoses.
Flabum1017 - How do I check the pressure at the rails, and what should it be?
